Breaking news: Ny Jets have just traded a 4th round pick for Tim Tebow

Absolutely, 100% in favor of this. Fully aware this is likely to be mocked.

Sorry MJ. It's an awful trade. With so many needs to fill on this team they did not need to give up a valuable 4th round pick. It just smacks of more Woody Johnson BS, wanting to keep the team in the media spotlight and not caring about the overall talent of the team.

The last thing the Jets need is Tim Tebow.

But if you're smart you should be able to turn a profit here....

4th round picks really aren't that valuable.

2011: Bilal Powell
2010: Joe McKnight
2009: none
2008: Dwight Lowery
2007: none (the immortal Jacob Bender in the next round)
2006: Brad Smith

(kind of funny/ironic that Brad Smith is a former 4th rounder, right?)
These are all, at best, gadget/package/ST guys, which is what Tebow is. You can easily find role players like this on FA deals - not unlike how NE signs a guy like Marquise Cole for a minimum deal, and the level of production Cole gives you is what you'd expect from a 4th rounder.

Anyway, bottom line is, on a "win-now" team, which the Jets fancy themselves as, you're not bringing in a difference maker in the 4th round. Any production you get there in the short term is available on the current FA market.

The team is need of depth. Tebow is only going to cause a circus around here. Do you really think he was brought in for the "value" he can contribute?

The "depth" you lose is easily replaced by a free agent signing that no one will take notice of. Again, we had depth issues last year and brought in a 4th RB in that spot. If the Jets had taken a guy like Kirk Cousins with that pick this year no one would have cared and he would have been inactive for all 16 games.

My two "what the hell" moments this offseason were committing longer-term to Sanchez before you needed to and delivering on the promise of "we're going to bring in a legit backup QB to push Sanchez" by signing Drew Stanton. Not often you get a "Our bad" like 2 weeks after the moves were made, and they certainly don't align with this, but thats essentially what this is. And since I hated the original moves, I'm good.

We'll see what kind of value he brings and what role they see him in. But isn't the quintessential "Mark Sanchez is just fine" argument by his backers boiled down to "Look at his WINZ!!!"? Would be pretty hypocritical to dismiss the same arguments made for Tebow, methinks.

I can now say that the two pro teams I care about have cemented their positions as the biggest laughingstocks in their respective sports.

Everyone knows this offseason should be about either solidifying Sanchez or getting a new QB.

Instead, they extended Sanchez and then undermined him with someone who isn't good enough to make a difference even if Sanchez loses the job.

I'm an Islander fan too. Make that three teams for me.

Disagree.

There's no reason to solidify a guy in the offseason when you questioned him in-season. Its like the dynamic Nitey accuses Mets fans of sometimes, when the heart grows fonder for someone the further away you are from watching them in game action.

I wanted to go after Manning, so that would be under "category 2" here, but its obvious Manning didn't want to come here and that was the deciding factor in everything he did. Woody could've came at him with a contract double that what Denver gave him and it wouldn't have mattered. And there was no one else out there you were going to jettison Sanchez and hand over the reigns to, just like that.

So no, I don't think either of your options above, once Manning was a non-starter, were "what this offseason was about." I thought this offseason, with regards to Sanchez, was about saying "Ok, most guys didn't like the system; we have a much larger investment in the players than the system, so we'll change the system and give you guys a chance to show us it was indeed the system and not its parts. But if that doesn't work, we're prepared to move on from the parts then cuz obviously, this offense as it is ain't working."

The Sanchez extension killed that, and I HATED the Sanchez extension. But if the most realistic/best scenario at the outset was that the Jets were going to bring in a Chad Henne or David Garrard type - a guy who wasn't maybe an immediate threat to jump ahead of Sanchez on the depth chart but good enough to push him and good enough to be inserted if need be - isn't that essentially what they've done, plus add a guy who does more than just hold a clipboard when he's not playing? Spare me the "LOLJets Circus" stuff - you really think if Sanchez struggled early the Jet fan would've had any problem chanting for Henne or Orton or Garrard or any other veteran backup? They may not have learned Drew Stanton's name until Week 8, but once they did, they'd chant for him too. That was going to happen regardless, and you want to know why? CUZ SANCHEZ HASN'T EARNED THE RIGHT TO NOT BE QUESTIONED IF HE DOESN'T PERFORM. And you know how he shuts up the questioning? GET BETTER - doesn't matter if its Orton or Henne or Tebow or Brunell or McElroy or Stanton backing him up. He's going to be the starter and given the chance to show himself, which is all he's earned with his play to date. If he can't fend off Tebow, he doesn't deserve to be given the extended rope. Sorry.

Basically, someone has to explain the downside to me here. We cost ourselves a chance at grabbing this year's Bilal Powell in the draft to bring in Tebow? Yeah, just not too concerned about that one coming back to bite us. And just to show its not just a "Mistuh T made a bad 4th round pick" anomoly that I'm citing: Giants fans, who the heck is James Brewer, who was your 4th round pick last year?

Cofield and Jacobs were 4th round picks. I'm not really arguing your point, because if you go through history, lots of the 4th rounders were eh.

By the way in the same 4th round they picked Brad Smith, they also picked Leon Washington and the year before they grabbed Kerry Rhodes.
