This is a bit of a head scratcher I think. I suppose it can't hurt to have a good backup, but I don't think I'd give up multiple draft picks for one.

I don't think they gave up multiple picks. It's a 6th that could turn into a 5th...

The Chargers are believed to be giving up a sixth-round draft pick that could escalate to a fifth-rounder, depending on Volek's playing time.

Volek's one of the best backups in the game. I like the deal for the Chargers, although it's not like the Titans need him.

Why did the Titans sour on Volek? He should have been their starting QB this year.

It sounds like he was upset that the Titans wanted to integrate Young into the lineup, he felt as he earned the fulltime starting job.

Hey, the Titans paid Young 50 million, 25 mil of that is guaranteed. He's going to play.

Well, they've started Kerry Collins each of the first two games.

That was because Volek was told Young was going to play the last game of the preseason and he made such an uproar about it they didn't want to have him the starter.

SD needed a veteran backup. If Rivers were to go down then they have Charlie Whitehurst backing him up. Once they proved to themselves they were going to be a really good team they went out and made a deal to bring in a veteran who could win for them now.

This thing SD might be effective. Having 2 young promising QBs on the roster. If they were to trade Brees they could've gotten something solid for him.

I cant believe that Herm and KC didnt make big play for Volek......

Being in the Nashville area I can tell you that Fisher didn't feel that Volek was an NFL starter. Fisher wanted to sign Collins long before it happen but GM Floyd Reese kept holding out. I look for Reese to be gone at the end of the season. Fisher and Reese don't see eye to eye on personnel moves and owner Bud Adams really likes Fisher. Fisher's contract expires at the end of the season so he can move on if he chooses. Norm Chow wasn't real high on Volek, either.

Titans really screwed up here bc they should have traded him near the draft when his value was higher than a late second day pick

Volek asked for a trade in the summer of '05. He felt he was a starter and he knew he wouldn't start as long as McNair was there. When McNair was traded and Volek inherited the QB job the coaching staff didn't feel he was committed to doing the things necessary to be a starter in the NFL. When Collins was brought in Volek immediately went to Jeff Fisher and GM Floyd Reese and demanded a trade. It's been a done deal for awhile but the Titans wouldn't complete the trade till after they played the Chargers.
