Local star Miguel Maysonet was waived by Philly. Make sense here with Goodson on his way out shortly?

Seems like a great guy. Combined with all that production, easy to see why Idzik and co. wanted him so bad.

Cut this guy - its obvious this won't be even close to the last headache he provides and, oh yeah, there's probably a reason he can't get on the field for bad bad teams.

Kellen Winslow Jr. and Mike Sims-Walker have been invited to minicamp.

Love the Winslow invite. I've been thinking about that all offseason as we kept striking out elsewhere on TE - I didn't know how viable he was health-wise after last season but 2011 he was still very good. And of course, we have nothing at the position, at spot where our OC likes to use 2 in a lot of sets. People were actually starting to talk about Hayden Smith, who is a cool story no doubt, getting significant time this year. If he plays his way into it, great, but he was kind of getting such hype by default.

MSW is a flake and doubtful anything comes of that one.

I like Smith better than Cumberland, but I still don't have much confidence in him.

Ed Werder @Edwerderespn
Just filed to ESPN: The Patriots are signing QB Tim Tebow and expect him to be in minicamp tomorrow

But he ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY can't crack this Jets roster and QB competition.

Yup. Keep on keepin' on, Mark Sanchez, Phil Simms' kid who couldn't play for 2 college teams and Greg McElroy, passed on the depth chart by Phil Simms' kid who couldn't play 2 college teams.

I mean sure, point is, there's no way he should be a key job by default. The Jets are less-than-thin at TE. They are emaciated.

Gary Myers of the Daily News made a good point last night talking about Tebow.

What makes anyone think he can play a position other than quarterback? (at an NFL level, at least)

He's big (for a quarterback), strong, and tough. But he has is not explosive at all and no one has any idea if he can catch the ball or even master the mental part of playing another position, let alone being a jack-of-all-trades who has to know his way around a bunch of positions.

Maybe Belichick can craft some kind of a role for him, but the only thing Tebow has ever shown is the ability to play quarterback in a system that is tailored to his skill-set.

The Pats aren't going to deviate from what works for Tom Brady. And Brady historically stays in games that are blowouts. His backups only play if he can't walk.

This was true of the talk of running back.

But someone in the Boston media posted the other day that 2010 Tebow at the combine would have scored highest in a lot of the physical tests for TE's at this year's combine.

The coaches are toying with the idea of turning Smith into what Tebow was supposed to be last season -- a change-of-pace quarterback (assuming he doesn't win the starting job). Smith would have a package of plays, mainly read-option runs that could exploit his speed.

Um, yeah, let's not do this please. The "change of pace" plan was ridiculous last season with Tebow and it would be even MORE ridiculous to do it this year with a rookie QB who is a clear pocket-passer and probably close to a zero-threat as a rusher (1.4 yards per rush attempt career at West Virginia).

Putting aside the wisdom of what they may be considering, I don't think it bodes well for how they see Geno that they're already in tinkering mode. Just work on making him the best NFL qb he can be. If it takes time, so be it. But forget the gimmicks

Agreed, but just quick notes on Geno's rushing:

-Little bit of system influence there as he was playing in more of a "Air Raid" system under Holgorsen which doesn't really encourage the type of read-option like plays you'll see in a lot of college offenses which allow for QB accumulation of rushing yards. Think Geno is supposed to be athletic enough to adapt to something like that if needed - not that I think you drafted him for that.

-College rushing stats for QBs are different than pro's because sacks are deducted from rushing yardage and considered a "carry". For an example, in the TCU game this year, Geno gets credit for 10 carries, 28 yard. In actuality, he was sacked twice for -17 yards, so he really had 8 carries for 45 yards.
