I think the Jets know they're stuck with Sanchez until his contract expires (or at least until they can release him without taking a huge cap hit--I'm not sure if that's even possible).

A guy like Garrard would be signed to bridge the time between now and the Sanchez emancipation without locking up another huge chunk of the cap at one position.

It's bad enough now, but it would be malpractice to add another high-priced QB with all the holes that need to be filled.

Meh, why are you bridging the gap with a 35 year old who hasn't played in 2 years, though? Lets not pretend like David Garrard was anything more than a game manager in his prime, too. I feel like I'm having the same arguments with Garrard as I am with Marlon Byrd in the other forum.

Its not like sure thing QBs ever come onto the free agent market. The whole Peyton Manning thing is a once in a lifetime type deal and was only happening because of the neck issues and the uncertainties there. So its not like clearing Sanchez' cap space will suddenly allow us to head into free agency and find our franchise QB that way (or at least, any more than you can do that right now, with talents like Flynn, who aren't all that expensive).

I read yesterday that teams are looking at Chase Daniel to perhaps compete for a starting job - wouldn't it make more sense to do something like that as we "bridge the gap" and perhaps FIND a solution in the meantime rather than design a QB competition around failures and has-beens and guys that, quite frankly, Sanchez is better than, so you just stay in QB purgatory for another year or 2? Just like with the Mets, its not like once Sanchez leaves its PRESTO CHANGEO we're suddenly in great shape again - there is a step 2 in there, and thats finding a QB who is better than Sanchez to take his spot.

And again, if you're really going to bring in Garrard to hand the ball off 35+ times a game and dink and dunk all over the field, or Brady Quinn to show off his "great arm" in practice and get those happy feet in games, let Tebow have a fair shot at the job, because he is definitely better than those 2 and he fits the same cost-effective salary gig.

Trading Revis would be an awful, awful move.

Matt Moore off the market. Resigns with Dolphins.

Jets tendered restricted free agent TE Jeff Cumberland at the original-round level.

It comes with a $1.323 million price. The Jets were considering a second-round tender, which would have cost $2.023 million. Since Cumberland was undrafted, the Jets would receive no draft-pick compensation if he signed elsewhere and they chose not to match. Cumberland is unlikely to be pursued.

Daily News and PFT report Jets WILL trade Revis, have no intention of negotiating contract with him, and have at least 1 good offer on the table.

So what was that about the Top 5 defense to go with the 35 yr old game manager QB who hasn't played in 2 years?

Garrard hasn't played a regular season game in years, is 35, and was only average-ish when he was healthy. Really have to question what he is left at this point. Probably still better than Sanchez if his body can hold up, but he's just an incredibly bleh pickup.

Thank you! Finally get some backup here on this.

Its a very small upgrade for the very short term IF A 35 YR OLD WHO HASN'T BEEN HEALTHY ENOUGH TO TAKE A REGULAR SEASON PRACTICE SNAP IN 2 YEARS can stay healthy, at a spot where a big upgrade for the long-term is needed.

Oh and the Jets are releasing Pouha. "Top 5 defense" = Mo Wilk, Cro and David Harris? Unlikely folks.

The Top 5 defense thing was so overrated anyway. As long as the defense didn't face a good offense they were top 5. And as long as they didn't have to protect a lead on the last drive of the opposition they were top 5. Biggest joke going.

I think you have to get it out of your head that the Jets are looking for a long term solution this year at QB. There is no one worthy (probably,) in the draft nor free agency.

We haven't really done a formal FA primer here, have we?

In a quick and dirty manner, Free Agency officially opens at 4 PM today. Jets sit about $10m under the cap after today's release of Sione Pouha with a huge amount of needs to fill. Here's the activity so far:

Cut: Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Eric Smith, Sione Pouha, Jason Smith
Free Agents: Yeremiah Bell, LaRon Landry, Brandon Moore, Matt Slauson, Shonn Greene, Nick Folk, Mike DeVito, Dustin Keller, Tanner Purdum, Chaz Schilens, Braylon Edwards, Lex Hillard
Going to be Cut: Tim Tebow

Resigned: Jeff Cumberland, Josh Mauga, Austin Howard (no one is giving up a 2nd rounder for him)
Signed: David Garrard

For those counting at home, thats 12 starters (plus 2 of your 3 "specialist" starters) from 2012 not under contract: 7 defensive starters, 5 offensive. $10m to spend. GO!
