This preseason has pretty much been nothing short of disaster. We knew the offense was going to be brutal, but the combo of the laughable handle of the Geno injury, Holmes' suffering the worst Lisfranc injury ever apparently and our backfield turning into a walking infirmary (or jail cell I guess), its going to be bad AND boring. The defensive blueprint is also off to a great start with our supposed dynamo d-line already at 66% strength and Rex taking the secondary to task along with the noted LB problems.

In any event, we're officially entering the Clowney Sweepstakes with Sanchez under center, Ben Obamanu as our #1 reciever and the electric Bilal Powell leading the ground game.

Well, considering they didn't score an offensive touchdown until the third string came on in the last preseason game last year, I'd consider this preseason a monumental success.

At least there is some optimism around Holmes now:

Quote:
Santonio Holmes' return to the practice field may not be that far away.

"Hopefully, we're getting close," GM John Idzik said Monday morning in an interview on WFAN radio.

This was by far the most optimistic comment on a possible return from any member of the Jets' organization, which has been guarded in his comments on Holmes' rehab. Idzik confirmed what was apparent to anyone who watched the pre-game warmups Saturday night at MetLife Stadium. Holmes is running at full speed and cutting, showing "functional movement," as Idzik described it. Holmes also is running on grass, according to Idzik.

McIntyre will be the starter with Coples out on the outside. He's moving into Eric Smith territory for me whereas I used to like him as a role player/special teams guy but suddenly he kept showing up more and more on the field, and you realized why he was a role player/special teamer.

Anyway, that is a scary group of OLBs - Pace, Mc, Barnes. Eeek.

Better than what we had last year.

Manish Mehta seems to think this whole QB competition is a charade and Geno, who is starting this Saturday, will win the job as long as he doesn't look awful in 2 quarters:
Quote:
The Jets’ farcical quarterback competition will conclude Saturday night with rookie Geno Smith needing two turnover-free quarters to secure a job that many people in the organization want him to win.

Although Rex Ryan hasn’t announced a starter for the third preseason game against the Giants, the Daily News has learned that Smith will get the nod if he doesn’t suffer a setback with his ankle in the next few days.

The Jets’ plan is simple: Start the rookie if he’s healthy.

Its actually the same starters we had last year, with Pace a year older, Barnes replaces Bryan Thomas.

Thankfully. They can rectify this whole bungling of the ankle injury provided no setback this week.

I'm not sure I could've talked myself into being excited for the season for anything other than fantasy purposes if Sanchez was going under center week 1, aka, lets countdown how many misplays he has to make and excuses Rex can find before we make the switch.

Brian Costello @BrianCoz
Cromartie just crushed Stephen Hill. Totally unnecessary. Really hurt him. Bush league #NYJ

From practice today. Reports on Geno (3rd day in a row w/ 1st team) have been good.

Holmes significantly pumped the brakes on talks on an imminent return yesterday, saying he could be back soon but was also prepared to accept missing the season if it came to that. Tough to glean anything from him.

On positive notes, Geno had the best practice of any QB in camp yesterday heading into his big audition this weekend and Kellen Winslow has begun participating almost every day in practice so he appears to be holding up, which would be nice. Braylon, OTOH, in addition to getting very little work with the starters in the first 2 preseason games, appears to be getting less and less practice time - I'm wondering if he is eventually cut in favor of a guy like Ryan Spadola, who has impressed and plays ST.

Oh Lex Hilliard is out for the year, but he was getting cut for Tommy Bohanon anyway.
