Maybe Idzik is channeling his inner baseball GM, cut a below slot deal with Pryor and gets to retain his "most unused cap space" trophy?

Kim Chancellor was a 5th rounder.

Ugh.

I could've accepted safety because of the scheme fit, but not be happy. This isn't a scheme fit (Rex has continually regurgitated safeties and had decent results - not a huge priority for him) or a good use of 1st rounder.

This draft IS the Idzik "plan". And thats where we start??!! SAFETY!?

Earl Thomas was a 1st rounder. Rex did have Ed Reed in Baltimore, so it's not like he never has star safety in his defense. And the Jets did have a safety play like a star a couple years ago in LaRon Landry.

I like the pick. There are a lot of WR left. Can get one later. Had to take secondary early, why not get a good one.

Vikings moved up to grab Bridgewater to end it. Wouldn't at all be surprised if he ends up the top QB from this draft class. He's a victim of people really overrating pro days.

I've come off the ledge a little bit, but still think a thumping safety with coverage liability concerns is not a great 1st round value with so many holes in areas where finding a complete player is more "rare".

I don't necessarily agree with the Ed Reed comp (nor an Earl Thomas one), because he's a completely different player than this Pryor kid is. Reed was the perfect complement to two strong man corners as the ballhawking center fielder, as man to man on the outside invites QBs trying to attack deep, where Reed is waiting to make a play.

Landry is the much better comp (and why I also used Chancellor) and while Landry was a big time high draft pick, most would say that wasn't a good value in the end. I just think those guys are fairly easy to find around the league.

The ballhawk safety is the guy the league covets. That was Clinton-Dix if you wanted to go that route. Pryor is a more talented version of Allen - I just think you can find a thumper somewhere other than the 18th pick, with enormous needs at CB (though I wasn't all that enthused about using our pick on the 3rd or 4th best corner in this draft after all of our high profile CB draft failures) and playmaking on offense...we got a big hitter to take the place of a guy who while not great, was functional at times (Allen), something you can't really say about some other areas of this team.

seems to me that using a high pick to get a power safety was a long time coming… can someone fill me in on the last time we took a safety that high? the trick now is to make the next few picks count.

I remember last year when people were saying not to waste a pick on Geno, tank, and just draft Teddy Ballgame this year.

Welp, Johnny Football and Teddy Ballgame were there despite not tanking. Its amazing though the perception shifts in a year. People probably would not have been happy using our first rounder on each, whereas last year it would've been "HOW DO YOU NOT PICK THOSE GUYS!?"

With quite a few pass catching options out there, if they could maybe package their 3rd and some of their spares to move up into the back end of the 2nd, there's probably a chance we could walk away from today with one of the big remaining TEs and a second tier WR, if we chose to go that route. That would be a nice second day haul, IMO.

Say, Jace Amaro and Dante Moncrief, Davonte Adams or Jordan Matthews?

I do love this quote by Pryor:

“I look to intimidate guys right away, coming down here and just smacking people and letting them know there’s no fear in me. I play fearless. I’m going to fly around for the ball. And I look to be an enforcer right away.”

Sounds good to me Calvin :)

Troy Niklas has hands like feet. No thanks. We don't need another lumbering TE who can't catch; we've had more of those in the last decade taking up roster space than anyone in the league, seemingly.

Bills just traded Stevie Football to the Niners for a 2015 conditional 4th. Wouldn't have minded that price.
