Post subject:  RIP Frank Gifford

He did what many of us who are sports fans dream of doing and he was one week shy of his 85th birthday, so he didn't get shortchanged by any means.

I can barely remember the end of his playing days, but he became a star in the broadcasting field to the point that many younger NFL fans may not even have been aware he had been a star player.

He was also a "star" in the sense that his celebrity went beyond his stardom as a football player.

It's hard to think back to days before the NFL was the behemoth it is today, but my recollection from the perspective of the pre-teenager I was at that time is that he and Arnold Palmer were among the pioneers in parlaying their fame into ties with national advertising and marketing.
