It’s hard to find much fault with what the Jets were able to do. I love the Gardner pick. I like the Wilson pick. I like the JJohnson pick. I like the Hall pick. I like the Ruckert pick a lot. And I like the tackle they drafted in the 4th. The 4th round edge was meh, but maybe the scouts saw something or maybe he can contribute on special teams.
The only quibble I have is not trading back and accumulating more picks for next year. I’m a believer in that idea and would prefer to accumulate draft capital going forward, but this is certainly a minor beef and one that will be negligible if the players drafted this year hit. I think it’s smart to not be overly enamored or convinced in one’s own draft evaluations, and think the more swings you get the higher in the draft gives you the best odds to land solid players, but again this is a minor quibble.
Overall, I find it very promising to land arguably the top prospect at CB, WR, RB, and TE. That’s quite a haul and an excellent boost to the roster next year and going forward.
I’d add as well that most of the players picked by the Jets all play extremely important positions in today’s NFL. Breece Hall is the one player at a position that is devalued today, but could end up being a major contributor and an integral part of the offense. It’s not like he’s a punter. He’s going to handle 250 touches at least, so it behooves the Jets to want them to be quality touches. The rest of the class play premium positions and those spots are rarely available in free agency.
