To me this pick is one of the most important in the franchise history. I know big statement but here's why IMO.
There is no pick in 2010 (thanks I).
Outside of Lee there is no one currently on the team that can be a true foundation piece. Lee is a real nice player but no way am i giving him a huge deal maybe ~7 per (actually worked out a trade below, i love the trade machine). Chandler I am not sold on
In order to attract a LeBron something besides the current roster needs to be there. I don't want to watch another Ewing career where the Knicks are constantly looking for someone to ride shotgun
I would love Rubio or Blake Griffin
as far as the Lee trade (3 teams)
Memphis
Marbury + cash
Lee
Channing Frye
Portland
Conley
Antoine Walker
Knicks
Kyle Lowry (2 yrs left)
Raef LaFrentz (expiring contract)
Darko
Portland 2009 first rounder (lottery protected) or 2010 (top 8 protected) or 2011 (top 5 protected) or 2012
Memphis has 4 PG's with Mayo and Crittenton Lee and Frye are nice pieces Marbury and Gay could split time at the 2.
Portland gets Conley and Wlakers contract has a buyout at the end of the year.
Knicks get a pick and 3 deals that can expire by summer 2010. Darko i think could give similar production to Lee. Lowry is tough as nails PG, i like him better than Nate. Raef is salary cap fodder

Memphis has some good young point guards, but I do not think they trade both Conley and Lowry. Mayo and Crittenton are more 2 guards so I wouldn't expect either of them to run point. And if they do trade both, then I do not think they are getting enough back. Lee is good, but like you said will want a max deal and he's not a max player. Frye is solid, but is only a good bench player. He is not a starter. And who wants Marbury?
And not sure where you got the projections of the draft picks from but Portland is currently the second seed in the West. They are an up and coming team on the rise. I can't see how they would project to those draft picks. Memphis would likely match those projections more accurately.
A good idea, but I do not think its too likely. Lee would fit nicely on almost any team though, so it shouldn't be hard to deal him.

I feel bad that Ricky Rubio and Blake Griffith will probably play in basketball purgatory Memphis or the terrible franchise formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics.

Memphis is terrible but the Sonics have Green Westbrook and Durant. Add Rubio to that nucleus and you have the makings of a good core. Light years better than the Knicks

The Thunder may be inclined to draft Griffith due to regional bias and also they have been looking for a big guy since the Howard Schultz days on the Sonics.

to quote the great Lee Corso "Not so fast, my friend"
Quote:
Even prior to his injury, it would have taken some pretty special circumstances to get Rubio out of his contract, which currently sports a seven million Euro buyout.
With that in mind, and considering everything we've heard during our time in Spain, we now expect Rubio to stay at Joventut for at least another season, if not two, which is when his contract expires.
It's possible that Joventut decides to up Rubio"s salary from the laughable sum of 80,000 Euro he's currently making-which probably makes him the most under-paid player in Europe- but it's unlikely they will shorten the contract or accept an NBA affordable buyout prior to 2011.

But Griffith Green and Durant are all 3-4. Griffith is great and has a nice game down low a different game but I don't think it would be a smart pairing.
If Rubio comes out then i think he fits better. He is a bigger guard so on the defensive end you can line Westbrook up with the smaller guard and match Rubio with the big guard.
If Rubio doesn't come out i'd look to trade out of the #1 (assuming OKC gets it) and draft Greg Monroe from G'town
Curry would be nice in D'Antoni's system but i still love Hinrich for the Knicks
