Chandler, Anthony Randolph, Curry's contract and maybe Rautins and Azubuike for Carmelo?

Count me in if it comes down to that.

How much better does this make the Knicks? What seed could you expect them to compete for this year and in the coming years? How does this effect their salary cap position in the coming years?

As long as we keep Gallo and Fields I'll be happy. I would do that deal in a heartbeat and would be willing to throw in picks, Walker, Mozgov, Douglas, whatever they want.

As far as how much better, I think it makes us between the 3rd and 5th best team in the East. We still need a big to defend the paint. Maybe Mozgov becomes that guy but if not we'll need to use a substantial part of our MLE on acquiring a defensive center for next year.

I think our salary cap room would be shot in coming years, barring the cap going up in the new CBA (which is doubtful). We'd only be able to acquire extra pieces through trade and using the MLE and vet minimum contracts from here on out. But getting superstars in the NBA is what it's all about if you want to win it all and Amare and Melo is a great foundation.

false rumor time!

next up is reporters one upping each other, and then using each other as sources, until innuendo in some AP article becomes a hard rumor.

This is getting out of hand.

If you were Walsh, what would be your limit in terms of what you would give in a trade?

If you were Walsh, would you try to rush this trade given the recent losing streak?

For me, I'd keep the leverage of having the ability to wait for free agency. Unless it becomes clear that the Nuggets are able to move Melo to another team (in an extend and trade, not just a rental), Walsh should not offer much more than the rumored offered in the first post of this thread.

Walsh needs to keep his eye on a 10-year horizon, and he should not make a move for this year that could jeopardize any future years.

The goal must be to build a franchise that can contend for a championship every year, not to build a team that might contend for a year or two.

I wouldn't throw in Mozgov and I'd be hard pressed to throw in Douglas. Those are valuable guys.

Mozgov looks like he can be a genuine contributor on a winning team, even a championship-contending team once he gets to the point where he is playing with the same pace as others in the NBA. His size and abilities give him the ability to be a very good NBA player. He could dominate the boards and the post once he figures out how to and once he begins to simply do it (how many times have we seen him not box someone out on either end of the floor when he is much bigger than that player?).

I do think Douglas is overrated. He seems to be more of a Nate Robinson type player to me who can contribute individually but I do not see him playing with the team and contributing to the whole. He does not play with the rhythm of his teammates. I know others feel differently about him.

Still, he is a young player, who, I think, is still valuable on any team and is therefore a good trading chip.

Walker I'd be alright throwing in. Picks, not so much, unless they are second rounders, and even then only one.

I hope we just get him as a FA. I like this team and think that adding melo without losing key players will put this team to the elite level.

I am somewhat of a casual Knicks fan. I follow how they are doing but I don't watch every minute of all their games (Honestly, I find it boring to watch an entire NBA game). I think it is important that the Knicks get Carmelo. In the NBA, you need elite players to win and Carmelo is an elite player. Also, he wants to be here! There are never really any upsets in the NBA, you need big-time players. Honestly you can probably put the Celtics and Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals right now. If you don't get Carmelo, then what is the alternative? Waiting For Chris Paul or Deron Williams to become FA's? What if they don't want to come here? The Rockets get to swap 2011 1st round picks with the Knicks and they don't have a 1st round pick in 2012 (unless it is top 5, which I don't see happening)....so I don't see them getting an elite player in the draft.

The only way they are going to challenge the Celtics in the short term (age) and the Heat is by getting a player of Carmelo's caliber. Fields, Gallo, and Chandler are nice players but they are around .500 with those guys. If you have to trade two of those guys to guarantee you get him, then I think you have to make that trade. If you can wait until the summer that would obviously be the best thing.

According to the Post, the Nuggets asked for:

Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Landry Fields, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and a first-round pick (obtained via Anthony Randolph) for Anthony and point guard Chauncey Billups.

seems out of this world to me. I wouldn't do that if Anthony was already signed long term - even long term to a decent contract.

I maintain Chandler, Felton and a first rounder (ie Randolph) is alright. Gallinari instead of Chandler is probably too much for me. Heck, even Felton seems like a lot in that deal.

Even if the Knicks just lose out, they need to maintain leverage in all deals. If they stand fast it will give them leverage in the future because teams will know that they won't back down. Besides, I could see Anthony signing with LA if they traded for him, not many other teams. It's worth it to take that risk.

I dunno... I can give up Chandler. Never loved him and he will be a FA.

But Gallo and/or Fields? That's a hard pill to swallow, especially for a player that might be an FA anyway.

I'm very much willing to let this thing play out and the Knicks not end up with Carmelo. Just don't overpay. In the end, the Knicks will still have at least a 1 in 2 shot of getting him.

Sources tell The Record there is a tentative agreement between the Nets and Nuggets for Carmelo Anthony. Still need him to agree to an ext.

It is finally happening.

Enjoy your 6th-8th seed this year Knicks. For all the hoopla, you'll have 1 4 and out playoff berth this year and then the tide will shift right back to that "other team".
