If the Knicks are looking for a big body they could always call Memphis and offer Mason and Azuibuike for Thabeet....of course you could also expand the deal and throw in Walker, Shawne Williams and Douglas for Mayo

Knicks
PG Billups
SG Fields
SF Melo
PF Amare
C Turiaf

Bench
SG Mayo
SG/SF Brewer
PG Carter
SF/PF Balkman
PF/C Sheldon Williams
C Thabeet

I can't see Memphis dealing OJ Mayo for hot garbage. And let's be serious, if you don't want Bill Walker, Pretty Tony, Roger Mason, Williams, Buke why would Memphis who is especially loaded on the wing. Not to mention they are .5 back of the Jazz, who just traded Deron Williams to the NEW JERSEY NETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, for the 8 seed in the West.

Thabeet you could probably get for matching salaries. Mayo...not so much.

Mayo was more of a pipe dream given that he is persona non grata in memphis. Not sure thabeet would fit in the system but he give shot blocking and six fouls.

Got ya. I think if you had picks to trade, Mayo would be a possibility. But, the Knicks are pretty strapped for picks. And I am not sure if Mayo would even be a good fit. By all accounts he is pretty poor on defense and a ball dominant player on offense.

Knicks could use a reliable big man, a good defensive wing, and a young backup point guard. I mentioned him for the Nets, and pretty much every team could use him, but Shane Battier would be an amazing fit with the Knicks. Can guard tough 2's and 3's, will space the floor, doesn't need the ball, is a great team player, is an expiring, and can probably be had for less than fair value.

I also keep forgetting that the Knicks got Shelden Williams. By no means is he the answer, but he can log good minutes at the PF/C position next to Amare and is a rebounding defensive presence that they need.

i've heard, completely unsubstantiated, that if the new CBA has a hard cap, that cap could be in the 70 million range. That would certainly give the Knicks enough room for another star player, if there is no franchise tag, of course.

how the knicks stand salary wise now:

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_york.htm

assuming you sign fields for about 10 mil after his contract is up, and there is five or so mil in other contracts, that would leave the knicks with about 14 mil to go.

of course, how the cap will be in the new cba is unknown at this point.

reason why = http://espn.go.com/newyork/hot/?id=6150995

also see Amare turning this team around at the beginning by essentially saying he'd never been on a team that was okay with losing, and saying he'd change that attitude.

I think that may be wrong. Pretty sure Carmelo signed a 3 year deal. Anyone have the info on that?

Anyway, that contract is the right now, am concerned that the Knicks would have 2 players signed very long-term with pre-new cba contracts. could hamstring them depending on how cba negotiations play out.

if walsh is behind melo deal, would be pretty sure that they are confident in their cap space.

He had a player option for next season so I believe he picked that up after the trade and then the 3 year extension tacked onto that.
