""We have made a decision to keep Chauncey Billups for the upcoming 2011-12 season," Walsh said. "Chauncey, Amar'e and Carmelo are a great nucleus, as we continue to look to improve our team going into the off-season. Chauncey is an extremely talented and experienced point guard - we are very lucky to have him back."

Billups had a $14.2 million team option for the 2011-12 season, with a $3.7 million buyout."

Not too crazy about him as a player anymore, but he's a decent stop gap with an attractive expiring contract.

The NBA is one sport where aging veterans on large contracts are still very movable. Even when one's skills are in steep decline, a team will almost always be out there as a match in a trade. This should be the case with Billups. If the Knicks decide Billups can't get it done anymore, then his contract could be attractive to a team looking for an expiring contract or a team looking for a veteran to run the point in the playoffs.

Of course, this is the way it is now. But, things could be very different next year after the new CBA is settled.

Also, the Knicks shouldn't be putting all their eggs in the Paul and Williams baskets. Amare + Melo = Not much cap space in the current CBA and quite possibly the next one.

I think the Knicks should try to fill out the roster without another superstar. Sure, it would be a good move to get another superstar, but it would gut the roster even more, tie up all cap space, and it may not even be possible. Draft smart. Sign vets on short contracts. And get a new coach. That would be my plan for the Knicks going forward.

It's a good point. Seems like everyone is obsessed with matching the "Big 3" in Miami when it's possible to build a better team with 2 All-Stars and a handful of very nice pieces. But while possible I'm not so sure it's likely.

If say you have the opportunity to spread that '3rd max' money out to bring in a C like a Chandler, a PG like a (bringing back) Felton and a few other pieces like a viable SG (healthy Michael Redd??)and a solid bench big I'd think you'd have to consider those 4 over a 3rd Max (provided we're eliminating D-Howard from the conversation).

But is it likely they can add pieces like that within the next year or two? That could be difficult. I mean Chandler's almost a lock to re-sign in Dallas. Is it more likely they can get Paul with him infering he would sign for less? Well how much is "less" anyway? What could NO possibly want from the Knick roster to satisfy them? The league is running NO and so taking back Billups, Fields and whoever the Knicks select at #17 plus low 1st rounders wouldn't look good to other NBA teams.

Assuming Donnie is back he'll have as much an uphill battle putting together a legit championship team as he did getting out of salary cap hell IMO. I mean how do you go about any plan when you don't even know what the rules/cap is going to be?

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

I would have liked to have seen the Knicks go get Felton back and concentrate on a big or a shooting guard.
