The Nets really couldn't afford to wait on Dwight Howard, who could change his mind 20 times between now and the start of the season.

As it is, they will be an exciting, talented team that is a notch below the Heat and they still have a chance to pull off a deal for Howard if that opportunity ever arises.

So Jason Kidd claims Deron Williams was closer than anyone thought to joining him as a teammate in Dallas.

And then Kidd dumps the Mavs to play for the Knicks.

You've gotta love the NBA

Reports emerging that a 14 player, 4 team deal may be close that finally lands D12 in Brooklyn.

If so, what a wild ride for Billy King:

-He comes in with a pretty brutal reputation to replace one of the most respected front office men in the game over the last 25 years. "Same ol' Nets"

-They lose the overall 1st pick and instead draft future role player Derrick Favors at 3.

-He gets summarily rejected by each and every high profile FA he chases, and is so desperate to sign ANYONE, he gives Travis Outlaw $35 million.

-He spends the next few months exhausting all his energy on trying to sell Carmelo on the team and satisfying a seemingly dysfunctional Nuggets FO/Ownership tandem. Doesn't pan out, and to make it worse, Melo ends up with the cross-town team.

-He turns around and pulls a shocker, grabbing the not-really-known-to-be-on-the-market Deron Williams, gutting the current roster and a high pick, with no guarantee of an extension from Deron himself.

-Makes it his mission to get the pieces to convince Deron to stay, but mostly fails again in both trade talks (Howard) and FA targets (Nene, Chandler, et al).

-Blindsided by Dwight's inexplicable decision to opt-in, BK makes what appears to be an all-time blunder trade in a panicked moment, shipping off a high lottery pick for 2 months of Gerald Wallace.

-BK starts his offseason off with a big bang (thud?), by way overpaying the in-the-driver's-seat Gerald Wallace, and taking on the worst contract in the game in Joe Johnson, still with no guarantee from Deron.

-Billy's big gamble pays off, and the seemingly "Wha??" moves of Gerald and Joe are, apparently, to thank for Deron sticking around. Everything's coming up Billy suddenly.

-Can the Dwightmare now end on a happy note?

What an amazing run. Regardless of whether I like the moves individually on a basketball level, gotta love the activity and the aggression on an entertainment level - gives you something to talk about either way. Much better than being sold on a "process".

I disagree with Billy's method of building a team, but the end result may end up better than I could hope for. End this thing already

And I disagree that Favors is a future role player. Dude will beast

Clips apparently in as the 4th team, receiving MarShon for a lottery protected 1st to go to the Magic.

So it looks like its:

Nets get: D12, JRich, Earl Clarke, Chris Duhon
Magic get: Brook Lopez (s&t), Damion James (s&t?), Shelden Williams, Armon Johnson, Luke Walton, 3 future 1sts
Cavs get: QRich, Sundiata Gaines, Hump, 1st round pick, $3m cash
Clips get: MarShon Brooks

Cutting thru the crap, its D12 and stuff for Brook and Brooks and 3 picks as far as Nets fans are concerned.

Know what I think is funny?

No real, hard news on the Dwight Howard front.

Yet, ESPN, Ric Bucher, in particular, have produced breathless reports that the deal is close and could happen as soon as Monday night (didn't) and now, on Tuesday, Bucher reports the "deal" is shaky.

You can get a lot of mileage out of rumors that, once reported, drive the news and then turn out not to have been all that sound in the first place.

I am Knicks fan but a Brooklyn team makes me definitely have more interest in the Nets and even though Howard would make the Nets a really tough team to beat and I still want the Knicks to win I so want Howard to go to Brooklyn over the Lakers.

Nets are out of the running for Dwight right now. They signed Brook Lopez today to a 4 year max deal. The rest of the team should take shape soon, too.

I hope they can find a way to ink Gerald Green again. He was the best player on the Nets for stretches last year. That is not saying much, but he has game and would fit most any team's needs on the wing. He can shoot, he can score, he is athletic, he can create for himself, and he can finish off cuts and slashes to the hoop. His defense is a work in progress but the potential and tools are there to succeed.

Looks like Gerald Green will be heading to the Pacers. I wish him well. He was a bright spot in a dark time for the Nets.

Bah. Again, BK's wild ride continues. At some point, especially if they struggle early, the story will be about his failure to land Dwight rather than the other moves.

Anyway, new names being thrown around now are Antwan Jamison in a S&T, Craig Smith, Kenyon Martin, and of course Hump.

Deron
IsoJoe
Crash Wallace
Hump
Brook "The Big Disney" Lopez

MarShon, Mirza Teletovic, Tyshawn Taylor, Reggie Evans, Keith Bogans, CJ Watson, and Jerry Stackhouse

Not a bad squad at all. We could use a backup center and clearly the depth is in the guards and wings, but we will see how the rest of the roster shakes out. I can't wait to get a real look at Mirza. His body of work in Europe is impressive and his game should translate well at least to stretch the floor. He could end up being much more than just a shooter though.
