Thoughts?

Expectations?

Should be a good year with a post season appearance but will they. Get out of the first roi.d this time?

I'm pretty optimistic.

I think Felton, JR, Shump, Melo, Chandler is a very strong top 5. I think MWP, K-Mart, Bargnani, Udrih, Prigioni, Amare is a strong deep bench both offensively and defensively. I think Hardaway Jr/Leslie/kinda-Tyler is a great offseason/draft haul for a playoff team with one pick. I think that Diogu, Murry and Aldrich are kind of interesting camp filler.

I'm looking for Shump to have a breakout year. I expect a full healthy monster season from Chandler. I expect Bargnani/MWP/Udrih to make more out of Novak/Copeland/Kidd's minutes than those three admittedly likable guys made from them last year.

My biggest area of concern is on the boards. I'd be looking to swap offensive minded two-guard depth for a strong young 6-9+ rebounding machine who can play team defense and cleanup the offensive glass. Subsequently, I'm hoping for strong starts from Shump and THJ while JR rehabs/serves suspension.

I like Mike Woodson a lot. I thought he got outcoached by Voguel last year and Thibodeau is a strong coach as well. I'm not sure I give us a coaching advantage in either of those series in the future. I like our team character under Woody. I think he's creative and coaches to his players, but I wasn't wowed by his masterful play calling in the Pacers series.

I'm disappointed about the timing of the GM change just because you don't like the season starting with unnecessary drama. I hope it turns out that Grunwald has some personal reason for wanting to take a less public role in the short term, and the Knicks are accommodating him. That would make me happy.

I'm not worried about Melo leaving.

I like our contract situation for the future, and our team for this year. 8)

I agree with just about everything here. Great post. Can't wait for the season to start.

Need someone to step up and be a big rebounder

I had high hopes for Henry Sims. I have no idea how guys like Chris Smith and Toure Murry and Chris Douglas Roberts are in camp, and Big Henry isn't. Kid is 6'10"+, 24, busts it, rebounds well, athletic, big wings, and can score it.

Also, I think a developing young big man like Sims - or pick the young undrafted pre-25 6'10"+ guy with a couple of impressive D-League years of your choice in here - even with Tyler/Leslie already in the fold, is the right use of the roster spot. Going into the season, I anticipate JR Smith, Amare, and Tyler to be not ready opening night.

I figure opening night:

Chandler
Melo
MWP
Shump
Felton
Bargnani
K-Mart
Udrih
Prigioni
Hardaway
and maybe Leslie makes 11

DL'd/Suspended:
Amare
Smith
Tyler

That's 14. So one spot, and it's gotta be a rebounding/defensive big man, right? I'd have Tyler and Sims eat/sleep/practice/travel/etc. with Chandler and K-Mart and have them work together until any combination of two could anchor the defense. Then every blowout, all garbage time, etc. I'd send Tyler and Sims out to play together as much as possible to maximize their development/confidence and also optimize Chandler and K-Mart's health deep into the season/playoffs while minimizing their minutes.

Then Sims'd be my 12th roster spot Opening Night.

I guess I can live with Aldrich as a project in that spot? He's not my favorite underwhelming young big man, but I guess from the list of Cole Aldrich, Ike Diogu, Josh Powell, Toure Murry, Douglas-Roberts and C Smith, Aldrich is my guy. Though, it hurts me to say that.

Where are you Henry Sims?

I think Sims is in Cleveland's camp

15th man will almost certainly be Aldrich

yeah, I'm resigned to that. It could be worse.

I don't know that he fills the need, though. It's an answer for boxing out the David West/Carlos Boozer type guy the Knicks lack, IMO. I think the biggest area of need to address is some beef that can wrestle with those two guys and take some of the onus off of Melo and MWP to do that.

With Amar'e iffy to open the season and Tyler hurt they NEED a big even if it's for 6 fouls. I mean it's conceivable the only healthy 4-5's ready for opening night are K-Mart who is 36 years old, can't really play center unless it's against a small center, is injury prone and really should have his minutes limited... Bargnani who will start at the 4 (also injury prone), Chandler (who is also injury prone) etc. You sort of NEED to have an extra big. I thought they were going to bring in Haddadi (like him more than Aldrich) but Aldrich at one point was pretty highly thought of... and at least he's big lol
