I completely understand not burning a spot on Tyler if he's still weeks away from being able to take the court. I didn't think Diogu or Leslie or Powell distinguished themselves.

But I didn't think Aldrich did either, and Chris Smith...well...really? I might even not complain about it if we weren't like 5 deep at his position. I mean seriously, there's no way he depth charts above Toure Murry at Point Guard, let alone Felton, Prigioni, Udrih, or even Shumpert. I'd even give THJ a look at point before I gave C. Smith an opportunity. Plus with Amare/Kenyon/Bargnani upfront, we definitely need the roster spot for some front court brute strength/depth.

I don't see how you can burn a roster spot on a sixth/seventh string point guard.

It's going to force them to move Hardaway to get a big man.

I'll eat crow. I don't like the taste though, and I don't think I'm wrong. Give it time. One game against Bismack Biyombo, Josh McBob, and Cody Zeller does not sway me. 11-25 for 25 is solid enough production. Volume scoring.

The Knicks may benefit by going small.

I'll be bummed if they actually trade Shump here.

I'd be looking at moving a Hardaway/Udrih for one or two guys similar to this grouping, 1-5 year player, 6'8"-6'11", currently playing 10-20 minutes a night, and having some proven success in the Association as a rebounder/defender.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/s ... jj-hickson
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/s ... s-robinson
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/s ... yle-oquinn
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/s ... n-thompson
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/s ... eff-adrien

The Knicks don't need a 3rd year potential star/immediate starter big man, which is the only way I would trade Shump.

They need a back up established guy with experience; and/or a 1st/2nd year guy with a good NBA body, natural athleticism/defense/rebounding instincts, and starter upside, so they have some front court depth and rebounding and defense against bigger/stronger/faster athletes.

Those are returns for Beno/THJ level guys, not Shumpert.

I like Shump and I agree the Knicks shouldn't move him for a role player type (Jared Dudley, for example) especially since this team isn't a few pieces away and actually need to keep their young guys around as they don't have their 1st rounder's in '14 or '16.

But I'm really not sure what his upside is at the moment. I was optimistic this year he would make great strides and I also understand that the season is still very young. But his bread and butter (defense) has been inconsistent thus far as he's gambling more while not being the shut down guy he's shown he can be in the past.

Also, his slashing ability is not where you'd like and my dude has the same trouble finishing in traffic around the rim as did his rookie year. Ironically, his outside shot has been coming around very well dating back to the end of last season. His form and confidence in his shot is light years better than his rookie season. Upon being drafted I thought the J improving could propel him into becoming a VERY good 2-way guard.

Now I'm not sure if he's becoming more of a Bruce Bowen type (defensive specialist who can hit the open 3) than a 'best case scenario' Sprewell-lite 2-way SG that is routinely in the All-Star conversation.

BTW-Udrih came into camp out of shape and is still not in "good" shape according to Isola who was on the air with Alan Hahn last Saturday. That may explain why he doesn't look nearly as good as he has in the past.
