The first piece to be moved after having exausted all of their cap space is now a Hurricane.

Good for the Hurricanes and good for the Rangers, as it will give them a bit of breathing room under the cap.

who are these people?

Quote:
Canes sent defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, forward prospect Joe Barnes and a third-round draft pick

Quote:
In getting back one member of their title team, another departs. Hutchinson had 25 points in 77 appearances over the past two seasons, but was a healthy scratch for almost two months last spring. Barnes, a third-round pick in 2005, played in only 15 games for Albany (AHL) because of a concussion.

any of them any good?

Hutchinson is not much more then a power play specialist, he has very good hands, but does not have a very good shot. He skates well, but lacks positioning and toughness to be a top 4 defenseman. May still develop into an everyday player as he is still young and positioning can be learned, but I never expect him to be anymore then a 5 or 6 on the defense.

Barnes is an interesting prospect. He has all the skills and size you want in a winger, good hands, good vision, pretty quick on his skates, and a deceptive quick shot. He is however very raw and needs to learn how to play in his own end. He could be the sleeper of this deal. He was hurt most of last year with a concussion, so he really wasn't able to develop or showcase his craft.

Hate to see Cully go but I guess it had to be done. I was hoping the ex-Hurricane to be moved was Malik and hopefully Slats will still try to dump him and clear up even more cap room. I guess this means Dubinsky will have a shot at centering the 3rd line and hopefully he steps up.

I just don't understand this reasoning. Malik is one of most underrated defensiveman in the league. The guy doesn't look pretty, and often looks clumsy becaus eof his size, but he is a very solid defenseman. Not all top DMen have to score 50+ points to be considered very good. :?

BTW, I would take Malik back on the Canes in a heartbeat, he was one of Jim Rutherfords' worst trades in the last 7 years.

Underrated he is not. Who cares if he's 6'5" when he never uses his size to his advantage. He's slow (which leads to countless obstruction penalties), doesn't make the best decisions and offers little to nothing in the offensive zone. Plus he's paid like a top defensemen which he certainly is not. Marek is definitely expendable and if you would take him back in a heartbeat, I would give him back in a heartbeat. This team would be wise to dump either Malik or Mara and have Staal step right in.

I am not sure about the statistics, but I believe Malik was the best in the East as far as +/- rating and second in all of hockey to only Lidstrom. Yes, he is not flashy, especially on the offensive zone, yes he doesn't hit like you would expect from a 6'5" guy, but he is a great position player and in todays hockey that is as important as is the offensive minded defensive player who also happens to be good on their own end. He is not a #1, but when he is paired up with an offensive minded #1 he is a #2 guy on most teams save for Anaheim, Calgary, Detroit, and Ottawa.

He is not paid like a #1 or even a #2 guy, he is paid like a top 4, which is what he is. If I am not mistaken he is getting like $3.5m, which is not at all bad for what he does. Again, I would take him back on the Canes in a hearbeat.

Malik is the official whipping boy at the Garden. It almost doesn't matter what he does well, he gets constantly (and usually unfairly) booed.

In reality, I think it would be a mistake to let go of him.

+/- is such a meaningless stat though. I know I'm coming across as an anti-Malik guy but I really do feel like he's expendable. Rozsival, Tyutin and Girardi are all ahead of him on the depth chart with several guys waiting in the wings deserving of a chance. I feel like 3.5m is a lot for a 4th defensemen, especially considering our 2nd and 3rd dmen are making less combined. Whatever I'm still disappointed that Cullen was the one moved, because I feel like he has more to offer this team than Malik.

IM okay with this especially since we get a 3rd pick as well...Maybe Barnes develops , I'm hoping this means Dubinsky, Immomen, and Anismov (if he gets here) get a look at 3rd center ....Could also mean Avery/Straka may center the 3rd line if they fail to impress....Betts is a lock for 4th (where he belongs) center

Also, For what it is worth the chatter on the nhl boards I read is that Mara not Malik may be the next to go
