Sean Avery is not at all happy with the arbitration process after GM Glen Sather stated that he was a detriment to the Rangers. In the arbitration brief that was to be presented on Monday, the Rangers stated that Avery was "a reasonably effective player as well as a detriment to the team,". This was surprising to Avery after head coach Tom Renney praised Avery as a valuable component in the 2007 playoffs. "It's hard not to take something like that personally and not to be emotional about it," Avery said. "I know this is part of the business, I know this is part of the process, but it's extremely disappointing to read something like that coming from Slats [GM Glen Sather] and not to be offended by it." Look for Avery, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2008 season to sign a one-year deal and play elsewhere in 2008/09.

Look, this is something that happens in arbitration. It's one of the reasons players and teams often look to avoid it, it forces you to pull out bad things to say about your own players. I would be shocked if this is actually what Sather thinks. It's just business.
That being said, it stinks that Avery has to hear that about him. He's the Rangers' sparkplug and I think he knows he's appreciated by the fans here.

He also takes a lot of stupid penalties and that is a detriment to the team. He is known as a dirty player, with reason, and his reputation follows him.

UPDATE, 1:10 p.m.: Moments after I posted that last part, the Rangers made it official by signing Avery. “We are pleased to have Sean under contract and are looking forward to him returning with the same passion and enthusiasm he brought to our team last year,” stated Glen Sather. “He is a terrific competitor, who we expect to play a significant role in a successful season.”

Though I despise the guy, I can't overlook the fact that he is the heart and soul of teh Rangers. IMO, it will be a huge loss for the Rangers if they do not re-sign him. That said, I for one wished he never played in this sport because he is a classless punk.

For that money the Rangers would be wise to let him walk. He may be the heart and soul of the team, but he is not worth 3.75 a year. He is good at what he does, but what he does is not that important.

8 goals in his last 11 games playing on the Rangers' top line. I'd say he has a pretty strong impact on this team beyond his agitator role and it shouldn't go understated. This is a different team without him and with rumors of Sather rejecting a swap of Avery for Bernier at the deadline, I'd be pretty upset if he's not on this team next year.
G-rated, is what pops out of Rangers pest Sean Avery's pie-hole.
"He's got a pretty smart mouth," says Parros. "He's definitely not afraid to cross the line. That's why he has no respect from most of the guys in the league, including myself."
The closest comparison to Avery on my Hurricanes is Scott Walker, who is getting paid $2.5m p/year over 3 years. Though Walker is older, he is also a much more skilled player who regularly puts up 20+ goal seasons.
IMO, Sather and the Rangers have backed themselves into a corner due to overpaying Gomez and Drury, thus in teh end they will have to over pay for Avery. Good job Sather, keep it going and soon you will have this team back where they were before the lockout.
