Much like my "top forwards" thread, here is my list of top Defenseman in the league. Keep in mind, I am judging these players by what they are today not what they were 5 years ago. I am not doing a top goalie thread because I believe we already have one in "Henrik Lundquist is the best goalie in the league". (which he is not, but he is a top 5)

Top 10 Defenseman:
1- Nicklas Lidstrom
2- Dion Phaneuf
3- Chris Pronger
4- Andrei Markov
5- Zdeno Chara
6- Wade Redden
7- Ed Jovanovski
8- Mark Streit
9- Tomas Kaberle
10- Mike Green

Honorable mentions: Scott Niedermayer, Brian Campbell, Michal Rozsival, Sergei Gonchar, Joe Corvo, Kimmo Timonen, Jay bouwmeester, Brent Burns, Brian Rafalski, Lubimir Visnovsky

Discuss!!

Interesting that you have 2 Canadien dmen in the top 10 and Komisarek isn't one of them, who's probably one of the best shutdown defensmen in the league. Which leads me to this question, which aspect do you value most: 2 way play, physicality, composure, etc. I can't really argue with anyone on this list, but it's pretty hard to rank guys who have different strengths to their game. I'm also surprised to see Green rounding out the top 10, simply because he doesn't have the resume the other guys you mentioned do. Additional honorable mentions to me are: Brent Seabrook, Barrett Jackman, Ryan Whitney, Francois Beauchemin and Sergei Zubov(is my bias for the '94 team coming across yet?).

1. Nicklas Lidstrom
2. Chris Pronger
3. Zdeno Chara
4. Sergei Zubov
5. Dion Phaneuf
6. Scott Niedermayer
7. Andrei Markov
8. Sergei Gonchar
9. Dan Boyle
10. Wade Redden

I wouldn't put Dion that high yet. He will be the best one day, but he has some glaring holes in his game right now.

I'm not sure how you didn't include Zubov in the discussion, unless its because of his injury.

It was hard for me to exclude Robyn Regehr. He is one of the best shutdown defensemen in the league when healthy. Problem is he always seems to have some sort of nagging injury and is rather useless with the puck. Still, he should warrant discussion among the top 20.

Excellent question Aero. I value 2 way play the most, followed by toughness and positional play. Thus the reason why most of the guys on the list possess quite a bit of both, save for Kaberle and Streit.

I struggled with 3 of those names (Seabrook, Komisarek and Zubov), my reasoning was for not including them was as follows. I felt that Zubov's best days are behind him and he has lost a step, It was hard for me to include a third Candaien though Komisarek was somewhat deserving, and Seabrook came in just a tad short much like Boyle, Regehr, and Meszeros. That said, I wouldn't argue with including Seabrook on the list.

As far as Green, I have just come to appreciate just how good of a player he has become over the last year. He is quickly blossoming into a star on the blueline for Washington, he is a great offensive player but also plays with a mean streak and holds his position very well. I may be a little bias because i watch him a whole lot, but wow he has just come out of nowhere.

Ahh okay, thanks for clearing that up. I'm with you on Green though, I think he's gonna be a star in this league for years to come. The guy impressed the hell outta me whenever I saw him play and his offensive game is on par with any other defensemen in the league. If he keeps it up, he's top 10 for sure.

Alright, I may be crazy, but I see Dion, Pronger, Redden, Jovanovski, and Green for a count of 5 Canadians. Am I nuts?

aeroclearica, you would put Barrett Jackman as an honorable mention? I can't think of any reason why.

I think Seabrook will get there eventually, but as of now he is not a top d-man in the league.

There aren't many defensemen all-time I'd take before Lidstrom.

NYR needs to kick out Malik. Too slow and flat footed.
