From the Blue Jackets:

Backman and Tyutin for the often, well, uh, let's just say he doesn't always seem to try his hardest (the papers are likely to consistently refer to him as "enigmatic," book it) Nikolai Zhredev and Dan Fritsche.

I actually like this move. Never a big Backman fan and Tyutin became sort of expendable. I don't know a lot about Fritsche but if they can get Zhredev's act together he could be a huge force (and he's only 23). Playing in a situation in which he wasn't particularly thrilled to be in last year he scored 26 goals and 35 assists...

Hate to see Toots go, but what's not to like about this deal? Hopefully he can thrive alongside Gomer and give us a winger who can finish. They still need to bring back Jags though.

It's a good deal for the Rangers but, I am trying to not be the Ranger-hater that I am, they have gotten worse this off-season.

They dropped the ball on Jagr, Avery was important to them but I guess he was not worth overpaying with all the headaches he was bound to bring, Kalinin is a bit of a joke signing, Naslund is past his prime but if this were truly the Rangers going back to their old habits he would sign a 4 year deal rather than two years for more money. He can be good but I hardly think he could replace Jagr nor was meant to, but some average NHL fan (that's a bit of an oxy-moron) would think otherwise by pure name recognition.

I still don't get the whole Jagr negotiations. What happened?

But back to this trade, Tyutin was expended due to Girardi and Staal along with getting Redden. Backman was also a good salary-dump and was really more of a guy to take along for the ride in a playoff run rather than keep him for a couple more seasons. Zherdev has potential but I see him more as a Viktor Kozlov. Unfamiliar with Fritsche.

So what's the deal with Shanahan? Will he come back or retire? Also are the Rangers still players in the Mats Sundin race?
