Quite Tragic!

According to stories in the Russian press (which I have been getting from the Rangers forum at outsidethegarden.com), the ambulance had already left the building at the start of the 3rd period and they had no working defibrillator on hand...

Again this is sourced from the Russian press via posters so take it for what it is worth

Quote:
"We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei," Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said in a statement. "On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future."

Cherepanov was the Rangers' first-round pick, 17th overall, in the 2007 draft.

Avangard Omsk head coach Wayne Fleming said Cherepanov collapsed during the third period Monday night. Fleming said he did not see anything on the ice that could have contributed to the collapse and said medical personnel tried to get Cherepanov's heart beating again after it had stopped.

According to Russian media reports, Cherepanov was rushed to hospital when he lost consciousness after colliding with teammate Jaromir Jagr in the third period against Vityaz Chekhov.

I have heard the same about the defibrillator and ambulance. Still a defibrillator may not have been able to save Alexei.

I have also heard some rumblings that Jagr and Alexei collided and the collision caused this, although none of this is confirmed. Jagr was supposedly standing over him and saying something to the tune of, "Wake up, Alexei".

Just such a sad and tragic series of events. Someone so young should never be taken so early. RIP Alexei

This is a really tough loss for the organization. Sadly this kinda reminds me of some 7 years ago, when one of the Mets top prospects (Brian Cole) died. It's pretty surreal and just completely devastating as a fan to experience this again. The fact that he died during a game is even harder to take. I sincerely hope that this poor kid didn't lose his life because of an ambulance that left too early. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

RIP Cherry.

Jagr had nothing to do with it....Although he is quite grief stricken by all accounts

He collapsed on the bench...

Actually a video shot by a fan in the stands of the incident is on youtube, (Noted no ambulance as they carried him from the bench to the dressing room) but I can't bring myself to post it

Very tragic and sad. Only one year older than me, wow.

Reminds me of about 7 years ago when the Mets had to deal with the passing of Brian Cole.
