Tortorella's path to the Ranger job was cleared, sources say, because the Lightning gave Tortorella written permission in June to seek other employment and that permission was never revoked.

But sources say there are still some outstanding issues that have clouded the whole situation, involving other members of the Tampa Bay organization. The Rangers and the Lightning, with the input of the NHL, are attempting to resolve them and while a negotiated settlement is possible, it could well be that formal tampering charges could be filed by the Lightning against the Rangers before all is said and done.

This may have something to do with Lightning assistant coach Mike Sullivan, who reportedly has a clause in his contract that he could join Tortorella if Tortorella were to be named head coach elsewhere in the NHL.

But whatever issues exist between the two teams, they are not enough to prevent Tortorella from being on the ice with the Rangers at practice Tuesday morning.

''Torts is going to bring a lot more fire to his approach,'' Rangers general manager Glen Sather told THE CANADIAN PRESS. ''I just felt that we needed to get more fire in there.''

A change needed to be made and Renney was the obvious scapegoat. Sather's really the one who should take the fall here but he somehow has built up more immunity with Dolan than even Isiah ever had. Tortorella is a fiery guy, someone who's not afraid to yell at his underachieving players, so having everyone being held accountable for once would be a welcome sight. I happen to like Renney a lot, but it's obvious that his defense-first/lack of forecheck system wasn't cutting it any longer. Oh well, maybe they'll score some goals now.

Be interesting to see how Torterella meshes with the Rangers players, especially Sean Avery.

Hockey might be relevant in NY again with his interviews:

I think they still have a very good team and Torts energetic style of coaching could be a difference maker.

I happen to think Tort is a good coach so I think this is a good change for the Rangers. I still do not like the makeup of the squad, but a move in the right direction.

I got a laugh the other day watching tape of a Tortorella doing a postgame interview after a loss.

I'm not sure of the location, but the reporters were all in close. In particular, there was a tv or radio mike about 3 inches from his face and the guy holding it kept moving it around.

Torts was trying to talk, but you could see it was like when a fly keeps buzzing around your face.

Finally he stops talking about the game and says: "Get that thing out of my face. Jesus."

Torts is a good coach, but the NY media will get to him. I do not think he is any better then Renny though.

IMO, Sather was the one that needed to go as he is the one that built this overpaid squad of primadonas. Gomez = One of most overated players in the league.
