Not a fun start, what a disastrous 3rd period collapse last night in particular. Hopefully tonight is the magic night with Schneider returning to Vancouver.

Very impressed with Brunner so far. 15 shots, more than double any other forward on the team, and 3 goals, 4 points. That's going to turn out to be a huge steal by Lou.

Hopefully DeBoer keeps things right with the lineup, in particular:

Josefson is a solid two-way player and there is no way the Devils have 12 better forwards than him. He needs to be in there more often than not.

Mark Fayne is Josefson's equal on the defensive side of things, probably even more extreme. Bryce Salvador isn't good but of course he'll never come out of the lineup. Volchenkov or Harrold should be the healthy scratch but I fear Larsson maybe headed that way (and just as I'm typing this, he's apparently scratched for Fayne tonight).

We all love Brodeur but he's just not very good anymore. Lou didn't acquire Schneider for nothing, so he's going to play, but so is Marty barring an injury. Hopefully the tilt favors Schneider, especially as we get late in the season around playoff time. I would expect/hope there is a clear separation between the two by then.

Brutal 3rd period last night. Very lucky to get a point out of that mess.

Agreed on all points.

DeBoer doesn't have the guts to scratch certain players who deserve to be scratched. Larsson should not be the one sitting, as you said.

Offensively, I think things are coming together. Brunner and Ryder look good. Jagr looks old and slow, but he did miss all of preseason and he did tally last night. As for the lineup, I can't believe he's scratching Josefson for the 4th game in a row. He's better than Gionta. I think if you dressed both Olesz and Josefson on the 4th line, you'd actually get an occasional goal from the unit.

I thought Brodeur actually looked very spry in the first 2 periods, making several nice stops. He was hung out to dry on a couple of those 3rd period goals, but yeah, Schneider is obviously the better goalie at this point.

I'm excited to see this madness unfold in Vancouver tonight.

Gionta is absolutely the worst. It's kind of amazing how he's gone from fringy AHL'er to consistent 4th line player who gets PK time at the NHL level despite being the same player talent-wise. He and his entire line are still running off the high from that 2012 Finals playoff push. I do like DeBoer for the most part, but the CBGB obsession needs to end. It sucks that Josefson remains benched but at least Olesz is in there tonight.

Agreed on Jagr: incredibly slow in open-ice, going to depend on his linemates to drive the play, but still confident in him with the puck in the offensive zone, still has a nice shot.

Zidlicky has been impressive so far, too. When it comes to skating ability and moving the puck, he's the yin to Salvador and Volchenkov's yang.

DeBoer has Loktionov practicing on the 5th (aka healthy scratch) line. Ugh. It's bad enough Josefson still can't get a chance but now Loktionov is going to sit to reunite CBGB? That's even worse. Come on Pete.

He also tells the media not to read anything into the line combos and defense pairings from practice, then, seemingly always, the extra players in practice are the scratches.

I still can't believe Josefson can't crack this lineup, especially considering their propensity to blow these 3rd period leads. A solid two-way player with speed seems to be just what the doctor would order, no?

Josefson is going to play tonight but only because Carter is out with an upper body injury (day-to-day per DeBoer). Larsson back in but it's for Fayne, unfortunately. Loktionov, as expected, will be a healthy scratch. Marty in net.

We need to stop playing Brodeur. Like now.

Gelinas has really provided a boost. He's a good skater, has made smart decisions and has a big time shot that has really helped the PP. When Salvador comes back in about a week, they'll have a decision to make since Gelinas and Larsson are the only two guys eligible to be demoted.

With Schneider out, Brodeur makes his second start in a row tonight against TB. He got off to another rough start in Boston, but did make some nice saves when the Bruins had the momentum in the 2nd period.

Jagr has been much better than I expected. Looks like his early lackluster play was a result of missing the exhibition season. He looks much better now.

Devils are now 6-3-2 since the 0-4-3 start. They had the hiccup last week when they were blanked in back-to-back games (without the underrated Zajac, among others), but have played much better since the dreadful start.

Brodeur has been terrific. He stole the game tonight at MSG. He had consecutive shutouts coming into action. He's really looked like a different goalie lately.

Schneider has been good too, but they just don't score for him.

The Gelinas-Larsson tandem has been really solid, but I still don't get the Peter Harrold love. Fayne should be in there.

Jon Merrill looks like a fine defenseman. I am impressed by his play.

Flames playing spoiler :)

Havlat, Cammalleri and...Clemmensen (barf)

Well one thing is for sure, the Devils got faster (and older, and more injury prone) this offseason. Still I envision a better team.

Wish we would've signed Nabokov over Clemmer, who's just about done. But can't wait to see Schneider start 65 games this year without Marty looking over his shoulder

I saw a comment in another paper after the Alomar trade, that it was a very good trade, but it would have been an excellent trade if they had included Jeff Wilpon. Franco and Leiter meet with Mr. Jeff Wilpon everyday. Mr. Jeff Wilpon has decided that he’s going to learn how to run a baseball team and take over at the end of the year. Run for the hills, boys. I think probably all those baseball people will bail.
