Gov. Pat Quinn today signed a bill into law preventing state officials from putting their name or likeness on taxpayer funded signs.
The measure was a response to Gov. Rod Blagojevich's decision years ago to plaster his name on nearly three dozen signs on the Illinois Tollway at what Quinn said was a cost of almost $500,000.
"Sometimes there are those in politics and public office who want to glorify themselves at public expense, and I don't think that's right, I don't think the public feels that's what Democracy is about," Quinn said during bill signing ceremony at the Cermak Toll Plaza on Interstate 294, which used to display Blagojevich's name.
I have been saying this for years. One of the only good things about consistently reelecting an incumbent governor is that the state doesn't lose hundreds of thousands of dollars reprinting new signs with the new Gov's name.
This should be a law in every state.
We can all agree on this, right? Lyds? Banger?

Having grown up in Connecticut, where politicians are relatively inconspicuous, it was a bit of a culture shock to me coming to New Jersey, particularly Hudson County, and seeing virtually every public work festooned with signs listing the politicians "responsible" for the project.
The promotion by politicians doesn't end there. Kids who participate in sports activities, such as summer basketball or recreational baseball or soccer, are issued the typical colored t-shirts to be worn as uniforms in competition.
Except the uniforms also include the name of the mayor or the county executive, depending on what agency is sponsoring the activity.

Blago had his name on every tollbooth here when he was in charge. It was ridiculous and a waste of money. Of course, Pat Quinn paid $15,000 per sign to have them changed in a time when social service agencies were drastically cutting staff because Illinois was more than 6 months behind paying them, but that's another story.
