Wow, that's surprising. I knew he talked about it during the season, but I figured his crazy-good resurgence would lead to him hanging on another year or two. At least, to his credit, he's walking away because he just doesn't want to pitch anymore and it's likely not a money issue because his agent could probably spin off of a 2 year deal for a decent chunk of change.

Here's my dark horse for the Mets to go after in a trade: Lorenzo Cain. They'd have to give up something solid in return, but he might be a good answer for a few years, and he might be available - the Royals seem committed to Melky for another year and he's wasting away in AAA over there.
I like this idea. This was posted on mlbtraderumors:

GM Dayton Moore more or less confirmed speculation that the Royals will look to deal some of their wealth of prospects for a proven starter, reports Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star. "There’s always a few players in your organization that you view, (where) you gotta be extremely blown away to move them," Moore said. "And I won’t get in to who those pitchers are or players. And then everybody else, you look to make deals with." As we heard last week, several of K.C.'s top prospects are untouchable.
Not out of the realm of possibility that they'd move him. I wonder if they'd be interested in Pelfrey.
I also would like to see a prospect for prospect swap involving F-Mart. He needs to go to an AL team in a bad way. Somewhere he can DH a few times a week and play a corner outfield slot. Could see the Royals or A's being good fits there.

No room for F-Mart to DH in KC. They have Hosmer and Billy Butler. Butler is an every day DH going forward. They also have Gordon, Melky and Frenchy in the OF. I don't see any AB's for F-Mart. Don't see the interest for him there.

I don't think you can get a solid prospect like Cain for scrapheap stuff like F-Mart and/or Pelf. I think you would have to throw them a couple of real arms for them to bite. You wouldn't have to give the best stuff, but it might take something like a package of Parnell and McHugh.

I think you may be overrating Cain's value a bit. He's currently blocked in KC (won't be a starter in 2012 in his age 26 season) and only walked 40 times vs. 102 k's as a 25 year old in the PCL. I'm not saying I wouldn't be interested but he hasn't been all that amazing at AA (.784 career OPS in 537 ab's) or AAA .852 OPS in the PCL as an older player

At league minimum, I'd absolutely sign up for that CF production next year (and everyone who wants to dump Pagan to free up money should too).
He's suggesting Parnell and McHugh for that production so you need to subtract those 2 from the equation. Minus Parnell (who you like more than I do) means our pen has a chance to be horrific if we are on a strict budget.

Yeah I don't like his trade. We aren't in a position to deal young major league/close to major league pitchers, even if they are somewhat capped upside guys. Just saying, thats the kind of production I'd take in CF if I went cheap there. I also think thats the kind of production MDD might be expected to give maybe in 2013? Low OBP but average-or-slightly-better-than-average pop and speed.

Like I said in my initial post on the topic... YES I would be interested in Cain but I don't think he would cost a Parnell/McHugh package and IF he did I wouldn't be interested. McHugh has a LEGIT chance to be at least as good as Gee and Parnell is one of our better relievers (even though I am not his biggest fan). No sure what I would feel comfortable giving up for Cain but it would be more of the Beato/Schwinden types at the upper minors or maybe something of more value but lower down in the minors like Marte. Parnell/McHugh likely lands you better than an unproven 26 year old "solid" prospect.
