One can only hope that young Jorge Soler does not feel too much pressure to live up to his namesake's legendary major league career.

We will always have that one magical start in Arizona. A start so good my drunken friends called the NY Post that night "demanding" the backpage headline be "Soler Eclipse" lol

Cool article from Goldstein talking with Edgar Mercedes, the man who put together the Cespedes video, explaining some of the mysteries that were in it: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/artic ... leid=15501

Soler is an athletic, 6-foot-3 outfielder who can play center field but will likely end up as a corner outfielder. His high upside and potential to hit for power has made him a player coveted by a gaggle of teams.

“He’s got a Hanley Ramirez-type body,” Nationals Director of International Scouting Johnny DiPuglia said. “Plus arm. Plus bat speed. He’s a good kid, a good-energy kid.”

The Nationals, Yankees, Cubs and Rangers are among the teams who have shown the most significant interest in Soler. People familiar with the situation expect Soler to sign a contract similar to, but likely richer than, the three-year, $15.5 million deal the Texas Rangers gave Cuban center fielder Leonys Martin.

Soler would probably need 800 to 1,000 at-bats in the minor leagues, and therefore would not be an immediate solution to the Nationals’ search for a center fielder. But he has more upside than even Cespedes, who, at 26, has established his ability level and is ready to play in the major leagues.

Of course no Mets.

Ruben Amaro says the Phils worked out Cuban free agent Cespedes today in DR. Gillick was on hand. Sounds like due diligence.

I'd like to know why the Mets aren't one of the teams having a private workout with Cespedes. This isn't a peep show, costs nothing to look.

A scout who has seen Yoenis Cespedes told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that the Cuban outfielder has "too long of a swing for me" and compared the 26-year-old to Wily Mo Pena.

"He has too long of a swing for me," the scout said. "He could strike out a lot. He reminds me of Wily Mo Pena a little with his power, but whether you can devote those kinds of dollars and project him as a top major league player, that’s quite a leap of faith.’’ There's no question that anyone who signs Cespedes will be taking a risk, but, given the number of teams that appear to be showing interest, he should have no trouble landing a big deal.

Phillies scouting director Marti Wolever recently attended a workout of Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler in the Dominican Republic.
He also scouted 26-year-old Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Soler, 19, isn't close to major-league ready, but the 6-foot-3 outfielder is highly-regarded for his power potential. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post was recently told that he could receive a contract worth more than the three-year, $15.5 million deal the Rangers gave to outfielder Leonys Martin. While the Phillies are interested, the Nationals, Yankees, Cubs and Rangers are also believed to be in the mix.

Soler doesn't fit this description under the new CBA?

Quote:
Cubans under 23 years old with less than three years of professional experience will be considered amateurs and count against international spending limits...

Probably became a professional at 16.

Gerardo Concepcion worked out in front of Rangers executives Monday in the Dominican Republic.
Rangers president Nolan Ryan was with the group. Concepcion, an 18-year-old Cuban left-hander, is drawing interest from most of baseball's biggest spenders, including the Yankees, Phillies, Cubs, White Sox, Royals, Marlins, Giants, Blue Jays, and Red Sox. He was granted major league free agency last week.
