The #Mets have an interest in free agent OF Cody Ross and are making a run at signing him, says a BB source

I don't really see a fit with Hairston here unless they opt to go with a right-heavy bench.

Nickeas (RH)
Cedeno (RH)
Hairston (RH)
Ross (RH)

With x more than likely being someone like Turner, another right-handed hitter, right now.

That is strange.

Maybe a bluff to make the Turner-EY trade go through?

Rubin (unfortunately) brings up a good (frightening) possibility.

Suppose you could view Ross as a hedge against Lucas Duda in RF (or Duda having to move to 1B if Ike has ankle problems) as well.

That would really, really stink if a few rough weeks from Duda (offensively or defensively) and 30+ Ross gets burn.

Another underwhelming idea.

Unfortunately he'd fit right in....

This would puzzle me about the thought process of the brain-trust. If it is a minor league invite, I can see it, but at a major league deal, someone has to come off the roster. If he costs even $800,000, there was the St. Lucie rookie league team right there.

He is clearly redundant to Hairston...

I think Ross is better than Hairston, but signing both those guys doesn't make much sense.

Something to consider is that Ross has played some CF and he's not awful vs Righties. In addition to being insurance for Duda's glove, he's also be insurance for Torres' bat. Overall, he's a nice backup / below average starter. He's also insurance if the mets find a taker for Jason Bay and it might help them keep Bay's ABs down without drawing fire from the players union.

I don't hate the move if they do it, though it blocks lefties Mike Baxter and Adam Loewen and it does make the Scott Hairston move look like money wasted.

I liked the Hariston move. And, I'd like Ross, but I don't like both.

Ross is a much better player than Scott, and I like Scott. But this doesn't make sense- for one thing I gotta think he's getting some playing time guarantees considering he started this offseason looking for a 3 yr deal. He's not moving her on a minor lg deal and a 5th ofer role- I'm sure he could've gone to a better team for that if he wanted to.

This only makes sense as a precursor move. Or, more likely, it's an empty rumor that has no merit and won lead to anything.

I'm wondering if Crasnick has his wires crossed up here and it's the Red Sox making the push here with the Scutaro savings.

They cold really use Ross and they've been collecting a lot of guys to fill their rotation out with already so I'm somewhat skeptical on the Oswalt stuff.

We need somebody on the team that will make Jose Reyes angry and act out while the Baseball Gods turn against his team in Mets-Marlins match-ups. I am only switching the teams involved in this scenario with what was written at the time.
