Quote:
Murphy hit .263 in 80 at-bats over 24 games and 168 innings. But the bigger issue was with one aspect of his defense.

With Murphy at second, there were 20 ground balls hit in a double play situation (ie: man on first, less than two outs), in which Murphy was either the fielder or the relay man.

On those 20 balls, the Mets turned only four double plays. That’s a 20 percent conversion rate.

You won’t find many players worse than that.

Ideally, a major league second baseman has a conversion rate in the 50 percent range. Across the river, Robinson Cano was among the best in the majors, 58 percent

As a whole, advanced metrics had the Mets as being the worst in the majors at converting double plays. Justin Turner converted at 35 percent. Ruben Tejada converted at 46 percent at second, but he’s needed at shortstop.

Murphy is apparently doing work with Tim Teufel (insider piece)

Is Tim Teufel really the guy you want to be learning defense from?

Hopefully they're not watching clips of the '86 Series....

Thats not so rosy, but as it points out, this was apparently a team-wide epidemic as all 3 guys who logged time there last year were below the league average, and obviously we're dealing with small samples here.

And obviously, this isn't really an individual stat - there are other things at play here.

We'll see what happens - this is obviously a year to live with some growing pains for the purpose of a long term payoff.

Things you will not say in 2012: "The Mets would have won the World Series if only Murphy was better at defense!"

I think we can expect a significant dive in his batting abilities if he struggles at all at second base.

20% is brutal.

Yeah I know. Imagine all those poor players who learned their hitting from Charlie Lau and their pitching from Dave Duncan too.

Point being you don't have to be known as a great player to be a great coach. How do you know if Tuefel is a good or great teacher or not? Just because he made an error in game 1?

in a way, yes...

Teufel wasn't blessed with the agility of a natural middle infielder and had to work hard to be semi-decent at 2nd...he's someone that Murphy can relate to, more so than a Jose Oquendo type, who was a natural middle infielder...
