What's funny about TC's comments about Carrasco is that he's making what is going to MLB minimum in a few years. That said, I actually do understand giving roster spots at the start of the season to guys under contract if there are dudes with options that can be called up later (and the first guys waived). It's kind of annoying, but it makes sense to start the season that way if there are roster spots that are toss-ups.
The whole "maintain org depth" thing resonates with me when the depth isn't crap.
Actually in Carrasco's case, it might make some sense because, again, he was actually quite effective in the 3 years leading up to last year and, composite, he's been no less effective of a pitcher than Jon Rauch over the last 4 or so years. Thats probably more of an indictment on Rauch than anything else, but just saying, there's really no reason to believe Carrasco wouldn't be one of the 7 best relievers we have in camp if you can not let 2011 cloud your judgement too much.
I just don't wanna see 41 yr old Miguel Batista carried over Bobby Parnell with the justification being that Parnell had an option and Batista had a March 31 opt-out. There's almost no justification for doing something like that, where you carry the clearly inferior pitcher today, and the guy who has 0 ramification long term on this franchise, in the name of "maintaining org depth."
Carrasco vs. Herrera vs. Chuck James is really a game of, first and foremost, what do you want that last guy to be able to do for you, and if your judging on likelihood of effectiveness, I think (despite 2011) Carrasco probably still wins on that. Choosing the other guys would be more of a "what have you done for me lately" type of decision. And I highly doubt any of them are Mets beyond 2012 anyway so there's not a whole lot of long-term ramifications there.
And as much as I've kind of decided that Rob Carson is the "interesting" guy to root for in that group, lets not forget this is a guy who has struggled to consistently perform in AA - so there's certainly the likelihood that he would fail miserably in the MLB right now, despite the pure stuff being what it is and the considerable upside potential he seemingly brings.

With all due respect, I think you guys are going in way too deep on a passing comment made in late February on the possible identity of the last guy in the bullpen.
It doesn't qualify as a news flash that the team is going to take a longer look at someone it owes more than a million dollars to before deciding how to proceed.

I don't mind that comment from Coutinho as much as when it's ridiculous "Mets fans will be blown away by Ramon Ramirez and Frank Francisco" or "Harvey's mechanics look fantastic" that I roll my eyes.

Can you hear that mitt pop?!!
We have to come up with a name for these observations; maybe SCOUTinho? Yeah, I like that.
All you need to say is, "No gun on Santana, so no way to gauge velocity" especially since, apparently aside from a few Murphy and Rottino swings, the batters just watched pitches during this session, so really can't even gauge how guys are reacting.
I like Scoutinho though. He's actually been eerily quiet the last few days, though. Expected a lot more out of him.

Nitey just made me remember that I wish that whoever registered movaughn.org here posted all the time. Funniest username by far.
