To answer Toby's question, Joe Smith essentially came from Wright State by way of Brooklyn to the majors for a specialist role. I believe he made 10 AA appearances in between. So didn't skip it entirely, but hardly was there long enough to read anything from his performances, which actually weren't any good there anyway (12 hits and 11 walks in 12 innings).

Gary Brown, who was rumored to be a Met target in the Carlos Beltran trade talks, was re-assigned to minor league camp by the Giants.

I like Wheeler more but I've really grown to like Brown. Coming out of college I thought he profiled more as an extra outfielder because I was skeptical he'd hit to go along with his great speed and defense. So much for that. His numbers were definitely inflated by hitter-friendly California League, but he's shaped up to be a really solid prospect. He certainly looks like the Giants' future in centerfield.

The Indians continue to view Russ Canzler as their potential Opening Day left fielder. Canzler was acquired him from the Rays this offseason after being named the International League Player of the Year at Triple-A Durham. "We're impressed by the way he swings the bat," said manager Manny Acta. "He doesn't panic at the plate. He has raw power, but he's not a pull monster. He uses the whole field consistently." Working against Canzler is the fact that both Shelley Duncan and Aaron Cunningham would be subject to the waivers process if not on the Opening Day 25-man roster.
