I don't think the Mets are too worried about where Cohoon or Owen fit. They are seen as fill-in talents. Maybe they head to the pen in Buffalo.

He was a flyball pitcher with a homerun rate just under 1.50 (per 9 innings) and a K/BB around 2.0. That's just not any good and worse numbers than his brief stint in AAA in 2010. If anything, I'd have a hint of hope for him because of his really good VWL numbers. I'm sure he'll get a few starts with Buffalo at some point.

Owen is likely going to bounce around and maybe even just be stashed in extended but while I was THOROUGHLY unimpressed when I saw Cohoon pitch last year for Buffalo, I'm not sure completely giving up on him is wise, either. If nothing else, he's a lefty with workable secondaries who showed plus command prior to last year. He may just be tapped out as far as where his limited fastball can carry him, but I'd try to find him some innings somewhere. He is just 24, too - one month younger than Gorski.

In trying to find any hints I can, looking at the individual affiliates roster pages is usually an exercise in futility in the offseason. Its typically a bare-bones grouping of some guys who finished last year with that team but weren't invited to major league spring training.

However, the Bisons' website has the roster, while very incomplete, including guys like Carson, Hefner, Havens, Elvin Ramirez, etc, none of whom ended last year as Bisons.

Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn't. Just FYI. The Bisons website typically is kept pretty well, unlike some of the other affiliates.

I used to like the team pages when they were put out by the teams. There was a nice, individual feel to them.

I don't even bother going to them since they all shifted to the bland cookie cutter MiLB design.

I'd expect Cohoon and Owen to be long-men in the Buffalo pen until rotation spots open due to release. Last year Schwinden and Owen started as long relievers in Binghamton and both finished in the rotation in Buffalo.

I personally would have Cohoon in the rotation over Olson, especially if he's going to be the first lefty reliever coming up, he should be working as a lefty reliever in Buffalo.

Anyway, more fuel to the fire that Herrera would certainly look elsewhere when he's DFA'ed.

I don't think Cohoon is high on the list of callups - he's not even on the 40. You might be thinking of Carson, with their numbers and names being somewhat similar:

Cohoon: 4-11, 6.11 era
Carson: 4-11, 5.05 era


Cohoon has control without speed.
Carson has speed without control - if you could combine those 2, you'd have a dominant lefty, but that could be said about lots of players.

The standard theory being that you can learn better control, but you can't learn speed - so Carson's the borderline prospect and 40 man protected. Cohoon was not.

Carson is still on the 40 and he's a possible early season lefty call, though he was cut before guys like Edgin and Herera, so he's probably not first to be called, but he's very much on the list of guys we'll probably see this year. But I think the mets want him to work on his control for a few months first.

Cohoon's probably a long shot to see the roster at all.

On Olson, Olson is being looked at as a possible fill in Starter. Carson is looked at (for this year, at least) as a power lefty bullpen type. I think they have to start Olson for that reason, and I think, Carson will be used out of the Pen, in either Bing or Buffalo.

I should have been clearer. It appears that Olson is the first lefty reliever that will be called up from Buffalo. I did not mean Cohoon. If Herrera does choose free agency once he's DFA when Byrdak comes back like people are predicting, then it appears Olson will be called up if Byrdak gets hurt again or if the FO decides to carry a second lefty reliever. Therefore, I think Olson should be filling that role in Buffalo rather than starting, which would open a spot in the rotation that I think should go to Cohoon.

Since Carson wasn't considered for the lefty reliever spot with Byrdak hurt, while being on the 40-man and he pitched in Binghamton last season (I know as a starter), while Edgin was considered even though he is not on the 40-man and pitched in St. Lucie last season, I don't think the FO believes Carson is near ready yet.
