Even if these guys only bring back middle relief or backup position player "prospects" that would be worth a trade. Having cost controlled guys for these positions allows the Mets not to spend $1 million on bringing in a Cedeno, Hairston, Byrdak, etc.
I would rather a Bisons team made up of young guys who have the potential of backups who can be brought up to fill in than the way it is currently where 17 of the 28 guys on the current Bisons' roster (active and DL) the Mets signed as minor league free agents this season. That does not include Hefner, who was claimed off waivers and Herrera, who was DFA and passed through waivers.

doesn't it always come down to judging talent? If we added a 3.50 ERA middle reliever for FMART a couple years back the team's fans would think they raked us.
Looking back that wouild have been a great move for us. Hard to predict the future

I see contention in 2013. 2nd Wildcard is our friend.
The key is Santana - he pitches well this summer and we trade him
Our young starters develop in the minors
We grab a bat next winter
Contention means playing a little better than .500 through August. Its not that hard to do - Have some faith
I stand by my winter observation. A good trade of Santana is the key. Bring back a long term SP and starting C/OF and you've really got something going forward.
I like the optimism, really I do. But look at what you're saying. If:
1-a "good trade" comes the team's way
2-a "long term" SP (which I asssume means a pretty good one)
3-Two position players (again assuming you mean average to above average regulars)
...and you may be able to contend for the 2nd wildcard.
But how many other teams can say the same thing? Probably more than half the teams in the game can claim they're one big trade and 3 fairly big acquisitions away from contending for the 2nd wildcard.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:
"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."
But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

We may be an Oswalt away from competing for the 2nd wildcard this season. Ya gotta believe!
That said, I don't exactly believe but, in baseball, there's always a chance, and it's way too early to count the mets out, especially with guys like Wright, Santana and Duda looking good.
