Nothing wrong with that. He was a lot better than his hits, runs, and innings line will tell you.

Great velocity, 13 swinging strikes, 8 strikeouts to just 1 walk, lots of groundballs. These are all very good things.

In four games, I've seen more fight in this group than I've seen from any Mets team in years.

It's the first time in years that the Mets have had a lineup completely lacking in offensive black holes.

Get on the bandwagon before it fills up folks. Plenty of room...but not for long.

Jason Bay?

But I agree with both of you. Lots to like in this team. Tejada, Thole, Niese, Duda, Murphy, Kirk - all the young guys are looking good. Pen's been great.

Gee's turn tomorrow.

Not to bring this up from a few pages back - but NMig, you really are arguing that Hairston's feeble K there proves your point about him being needed against Gorzo in the 7th to lead off? Doesn't it further show how uncomfortable he is in that role more than anything, considering the swings he took in that AB?

1) If he really is the top bat off the bench as you said there, the spot he hit in was a lot higher leverage than the leadoff spot the inning prior.

2) Gorzo is very tough on lefties: obviously everyone is going to argue that you need to leave Kirk in there in hindsight, but if you used Hairston earlier, on defense alone, you would not be able to hit for Kirk there anymore. And while it obviously didn't get Hairston a matchup vs. a lefty, it got him a matchup vs. a primarily fastball pitcher, and judging by how everyone else fared tonight, looked like Gorzo was causing a lot more problems than HRod was.

Again, Turner in his role SHOULD be at least an empty-ish high average guy off the bench. I'm not sure why thats a bad move leading off an inning with the top coming up. AT WORST, its a coin-flip kind of move, certainly not some huge managerial blunder.

I think the bigger problem here is a) the overall makeup of the bench and positional scarcity there, b) Hairston, for a career bench guy, can't pinch hit even though he gets lots and lots of chances and c) Turner is not as good of a hitter as the top pinch hitter on a team should be.

"No pressure Dillon: just havent lost yet, so don't blow it, and we're handicapping you with backups and a little person playing 1b. Good luck!"

Wow...great post. Agreed. Withdraw the one criticism I had about TC tonight. I stand corrected. Well done, Sir...you get the gold star of the night.

Now...really...G'night!

Metsies Win!

I think this is right. I said before "skeptically encouraged" - for all I mock Pelf, there appeared to actually be a difference in stuff, and hitter reaction to the stuff, tonight.

He got touched up a bit there in the middle innings, but I think its a net positive outing.

We'll see.

Or maybe it shows he's not just very good against righties? Especially ones that can throw upper-90's with a hard slider? Check his career splits against both handed pitchers and that should tell the story.

And no, his career pinch hit numbers don't bother me at all. The sample is nothing and you don't even know how those PA were proportioned (how many vs lefties and how many vs righties). His 700+ career PA vs lefties is a lot more telling.

I'm assuming Gee is saddled with Hairston, Nickeas and Turner right?
