Eh, who really knows on the contract stuff. Reyes says he never got an offer, Sandy says he discussed where they would feel comfortable going with Reyes' agent. Martino has someone who says Reyes would've stayed for less, David Sampson (who signed Reyes) says Reyes told him he was going to whoever offered the most money.

It didn't happen here.

This is what just about any organization would do with a guy who put in 8 or 9 years of his major league career here. I don't expect or want there to be some sort of tearful reconnection nor some sort of 10 minute ovation, but this is fine.

I do hope some Met fans in attendance come up with something witty to chant at him though, rather than either an over-the-top ovation for a visiting player who, lets be honest, did chose to leave, or a scattering of boo's. Even if its patently false that we're "over" Reyes and/or "better off without him", its fun to pretend we are.

"Roo-Bin, Roo-Bin Roo-Bin Roo-Bin. Rooo-Bin. Rooooooooo-Bin"

Been wondering why this hasn't been adopted for Tho-lé yet.

This needs to happen.

coutinho9 My take on Reyes: He deserves a video tribute--was a great Met--on Chipper--congrats on a great career is fine. Have no prob with it at all

The final word.

At least until Fake Coutinho weighs in...

In the Metsblog comments section more people seemed comfortable with a Chipper tribute than a Reyes tribute. Gee wiz, people!

I think Prospectus has the most accurate take. The Mets went to the auction, but they had a strict limit and the Marlins topped it very early in the bidding.

I also think they were quite content to "lose" the auction.

In fact, given that they did very little to spend the money elsewhere, I'm not sure how they would have built a roster if they had somehow gotten Reyes, even at their own favorable numbers.

But none of that alters the fact that Jose gave us a lot of thrills in his time here and I think it's good that they're honoring that.

Besides, don't want to burn any bridges for when the Marlins decide to trade him

Meh. If folks want to honor Reyes, I don't have a problem with that. But for me, personally--the guy's not a Met any more. Ergo--I'm not a fan of his anymore. I root against him--at least when he's playing against us--and I'd be just as happy if we don't do anything special in his honor.

To be completely honest, I understand honoring Chipper more than Reyes at this point.

There's nothing wrong with a Reyes tribute video, or even Jose Reyes Day, but you do it 10 years from now, as an appreciation, not 10 minutes after he left for another team.

This is a great idea, but a decade too early.

I have a hard time watching Reyes on another team as it is, let alone when he's playing the Mets. No ill will, but I'm keeping an emotional distance, even if I'm glad that they're doing this.

As for Reyes choosing to leave, I'm not sure if that's an entirely accurate description of the situation.

Anyway, at least we have a third round pick coming.

Officially announced today.

Compensation round (35th overall) and 2nd rounder (71st overall).

That's quite a bit more palatable. Did they look at what Heath's been doing and do us a solid?
