This is a no-brainer to me. Wright is the Mets second greatest player all-time. The Mets screwed up with Seaver...let's not screw up with Wright. He is the kind of player (both on and off the field) that would make any franchise proud. He should retire a Met.

That's not what the article says. It says they are expected to make him an offer as soon as this summer. Nowhere does it say they are expected to sign him. The title implies 1) They are already talking 2) That a deal is close.
Quote:
MIAMI—The Mets waved goodbye to one franchise player last winter. They are not about to lose another, at least not without making an aggressive push to re-sign him.
The team is quietly preparing to offer third baseman David Wright a long-term contract extension at some point later this year—perhaps as soon as this summer—according to a baseball official briefed on the Mets' thinking.

Someone clicking on this thread is lead to believe that the Mets and Wright are talking deal or close to a deal. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk it's just not the same "Mets expected to sign..." and "Mets expected to make an offer this summer...." think about it this way... if this summer a thread pops up "Mets expected to sign Josh Hamilton" people will believe Hamilton is about to sign with the Mets.

Considering Wright's past comments about wanting to stay a Met and the fact that he's been very genuine throughout his career makes your transition to Josh Hamilton a bit...ridiculous.
If the Mets offer Wright a decent contract, even one with a bit of a discount, I'd be surprised if he didn't sign it.
This is from ESPN: "But it has become increasingly likely that Wright, 29, will remain a Met for years to come. Alderson declined to comment on any potential contract negotiations Sunday, but he all but ruled out trading Wright this summer. "I certainly do not foresee, under any circumstances, David being a topic of discussion at the trade deadline," Alderson said."

Nowhere does it say the Mets are "expected to sign" I'm sorry but the headline is misleading. You already changed it from "expected to" to "expect to" so clearly you agree what I said was true. ESPN's headline "Report: Offer to Wright looms", WSJ "Mets likely to offer Wright long-term deal". Nobody but the headline you put up says they are "expected to sign" (what you originally had) or that they "expect to sign". Wright is very, very, very likely to remain a Met. That still doesn't make tonights story "The Mets expected to sign Wright" vs. "The Mets expected to make Wright an offer as soon as this summer". In fact the fact it says "as soon as this summer" tells you it's anything but a done deal.

That's all I meant. I wasn't trying to be a jerk. I honestly wasn't. I came on here after watching Game of Thrones and saw the link and got very excited that they may be close to a deal with Wright. Reading the article I then realized that the news (while still positive) was nowhere near "expected to sign". I apologize if I came off as jerky.
