The other thing is that I think a Japanese conglomerate owns a large stake in the Seattle franchise (I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the case). With a large Japanese population in Seattle as well, I'm thinking they'll do what they can to extend and keep him...
I believe the majority owner is the former president of Nintendo. And I can't foresee Ichiro leaving or Seattle letting him leave. He's been their biggest cash grab of the last decade.

I just think that when you've been through a period of austerity and have been more concerned about letting bad contracts run out than in adding talent that your first big check shouldn't go to a 39 year old player.

If this was three years ago, when the Mets were close, and rumored in the market for Ichiro, yes.
If we are close in July and Duda continues to struggle, and Seattle wishes to purge its accounts while sitting at the bottom, sure (so long as they are willing to dump the salary and get little in return.
As a free agent...nope.

"Struggling" Duda has an OPS 75 points higher than Ichiro right now.

Ichiro brings more to the table than OPS. And by struggling, it does not include the very productive few nights for Lucas... May 29 .245/.337/.368/.705 June 1 .259 /.344/.429 /.773
A few home runs brought him in front of Ichiro.
Love Duda, but he has to hit to contribute (which I think he will, making this thread moot). I don't think Ichiro would be a target for Sandy in any case, so it really doesn't mean much.
