I scoff more at the idea that Familia ends up in the bullpen.

Has Familia sat mid-90's at all this year? I know we had reports of that last year along with touching the upper-90's in AA (which I'm sure was a little overblown) but he was 92-95 in spring and I'm not sure I really recall a single start of his this season where he's SAT 95+. Of course it doesn't help that we have no radar gun but I don't recall the announcers ever drooling over him sitting 95 or greater. He's definitely touched 95 and 96 when he's needed it, but my point is, I'm not so sure he's sacrificing velocity. At the very least, I certainly wouldn't be concerned about it right now considering Familia's last few starts have been some of his best in AAA (at least K/BB wise): 16.2 IP, 1 HR, 4 BB, 17 K

If he's throwing more strikes and still whiffing a batter an inning, I can't complain about that. He's also been getting tons of groundballs in these last three starts.

Ben Wagner is the only guy we can seemingly get gun readings from in Buffalo and he has noted a few starts recently where Familiaa velo ticked up into that range. There were talks of a mechanical adjustment.

You can scroll thru his timeline but I also found this online, on a recent start: http://toledoblade.typepad.com/coopscoo ... eries.html

FWIW, when I was watching, Wagner nor Duke called a single pitch above 94.

Sorry that's my job

Also FWIW I believe Harcey had a stretch where appeared to be backing off the fastball too do maybe it's an org or Brewer-lead thing.

But: yuck.

yeah about 3 starts ago he was clearly throwing 90-91 and "guiding" his pitches. Tons of flyouts and then it all unraveled.

Meh, you think he is? He threw more strikes overall tonight but he had 5+ balls go to the backstop too. They're both really two pitch guys right now. Harvey was definitely seemingly "ahead" a month ago, Familias on a better roll now.

I wouldn t expect either to be starting games in Queens this summer. Neither can control a fastball the way major league pitchers do right now.

I agree, and I don't know whether or not to end that sentence with "unfortunately"

If I had to pick 1 guy who could get by on stuff "overwhelming" hitters right now it would be Familia. I'm not saying either player is especially close to "ready" but when Familia is on he's really dominant. Familia is probably more likely to be out of the game in the 4th but I think Familia has a better plan out there. I'm not saying which one will be better but for one start I'd put my money on Familia.

It's really looking like both Harvey and Familia might need to spend the entire year in AAA, not that there's anything wrong with that (in seinfeld voice)

They will both learn how to pitch and will be better in the long run for it
