I don't know what "most important" means, really. But he'll probably finish in the top 5 in career hits, he's been a leader of a dynastic team that has been at or near the top of baseball for a decade and a half, and he plays one of the most important defensive positions in the game.

Yeah, I don't really see the problem with this. Jeter has been a great player and "important" is a pretty meaningless term that could mean whatever the hell Wilbon wants it to.

Babe Ruth would also be important, as he revolutionized the game, and Clemente perhaps as well, for being the first star Latino. Bottom line, though, it's an empty enough statement that he could have said that about almost anyone and you couldn't really say he was wrong.

Important? What does that mean exactly? The only person who comes to mind as someone who could be labeled "important" is Jackie Robinson.
Larry Doby strongly disagrees!

Was George Theodore one of the most 20 important players in baseball history?

Prepare yourselves, folks. This is just the of the iceberg when he retires.
And those who bring up Clemente and Robinson, bring up what Jeter definitely is not. A face of ethnicity and movement toward progress in baseball. Him being biracial almost never comes up and he is almost identified with being white than black. His broad, mainstream appeal is post-Jordan in the perfected saccharine image for an athlete that is harmless and inoffensive and something you can make money off of. Jeter, a HOFer undoubtedly, is more of the face in the commercial movement and power of the athlete over time.
Career for Jeter... .313 .382 .448 .830 (117 OPS+ from SS) 3100+ hits Averaged 15-16 homers, 80ish rbis and 20 or so steals (the HOFC's metrics) Iron-man durability at THE premium position 7-time 200 plus hits
Not a fan, but that has got to be HOF worthy
...oh, and the 421 celebrity girlfriends...

HOF is one thing, Top 20 baseball legend is way different. Jeter has had the benefit of hyperbole his whole career. He's been a HOFer since 2002, and when he does make the HOF now (deservedly) he will be considered the best SS ever or something. There's nothing like Yankee hype.
