I have to preface this by noting that despite my screen name, I do not speak or read Spanish beyond being able to parse out some simple words and phrases.
I was looking at the Mets web site on my cell phone and it somehow got switched to "en espanol".
I was scanning through and reached the standings. Whereas the mobile English version of the standings lists teams by their city name, the mobile standings en espanol list the teams by their nicknames.
Some of the nicknames have no "English" vs. "Spanish" version, such as "Mets", which appears in the Spanish standings for Liga Nacional Este. But the "Nationals" are "Nacionales", "Braves" are "Bravos", "Giants" are "Gigantes".
Here's where I got confused--"Reds" are "Rojos" and "White Sox" are "Medias Blancas", but "Red Sox" are listed as "Red Sox" on the Spanish standings.
Any idea why the lack of consistency?
Also, mlb.com en espanol calls the "Phillies" (which isn't a real word out side of baseball), "Filis", but I also saw Spanish-language sites where the team is called "Phillies" (likely in recognition of the fact that "Phillies" is a word unique to baseball).
Also, Miami, likely as bilingual English/Spanish a major city as there is in the US, is called "Marlins" in the Spanish standings. Is there no Spanish name for that type of fish?

That is weird the Red Sox should be Medias Rojas and the Phillies thing makes no sense at all. The Spanish word for Marlin is kinda weird so that may be why they didn't change it. The way leagues change names to Spanish seems inconsistent across the board though. In the NBA they just tend to put Los in front of the team name and that makes it Spanish for example Los suns which technically should be los sols.
I don't understand why they would change the names at all. After all, I don't call my friend Jose, Joseph. I call him Jose. The same holds true for his wife Alicea. I don't Anglicize it to Alice. Those are their names; not Joseph and Alice. Putting "LOS" in front of the name, as mentioned by Boricua, seems more appropriate to me.

How do you say Metropolitans in Spanish?
As the result of some kind of sick joke (I assume), Havana has the same situation we do with the Yankees, and the team happens to be named the Metropolitanos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitanos.

I was not expecting a real answer to that!
My buddy, also a Mets fan, went on a Hillel trip to Havana when we were in college and came back telling me we sucked in the Serie Nacional as well. I kind of wish he'd never told me.
