I think its a drastic misread of Mets fans to think that in general we'd rather see Hairston/Byrdak/Baxter win 78 games as opposed to seeing Capt. Kirk, Carson, and Duda win 71.

The general Met fan does not understand baseball like the general NYFS Met fan.

I didn't want to, but I now believe this to be the case. I texted my friend, who has had season tickets for the last 5 years, saying something to the effect of, "If the Mets don't trade Hairston, this will be the most I've been baffled by something they've done/not done since Kazmir."

His reply? "Whyyy? I LOOVEEEEE Hairston!"

I'm not sure we want to see either.

But we'd rather watch the young players as you build toward something.

Sandy and Co. seemed to be selling Hairston/Byrdak/Baxter as the finished product.

I really doubt that the GM is reading fans at all. Sure there could be a high upside prospect out there but that is a long shot and definitely could not have been offered. Hariston would have been gone of the price was right but keeping him does not hurt the team now or in the future.

I agree in principle, but Sandy basically assured that he wouldn't get anyone with any upside when he said he would only make moves that would help in 2012 or 2013. Basically, he said he would only exchange our mediocre role players for future mediocre role players. With those parameters, of course a move wasn't going to be made.

Keith Law also bashed the Mets handling of Hairston.

Well if he is not even looking then I would definitely take him to task on that.

I wouldn't call it not looking so much as setting unrealistic parameters preventing him from actually getting anything worthwhile, which then allows him to say "there wasn't anything available."

Adam Rubin @AdamRubinESPN
30 minutes until deadline. So far recapping #Mets activity: Traded Omar Quintanilla to Orioles for cash.

Unless the Mets get someone major league ready for 2013 I am not trading Hairston.
