He took batting practice with the Mets back in the late 90's and in the 80s spent some time w/ Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg in the booth talking about their HBO series.
I'm sure this'll be moved, but worthy of note b/c of the small link to the Mets.
Sad and tragic. One of the truly gifted funnymen of any era. His stand up performances in SF and live at the Met were both some of the funniest routines I ever saw. RIP.

We don't often put our contemporaries in the all-time pantheon.
I've enjoyed his work, but I wouldn't quite call myself a "fan"; never saw him in person, never scoured the TV listings for one of his appearances; never made one of his TV appearances appointment viewing. On the other hand, I can't remember watching him and not being entertained, either.
Back to my original point, I think if you look at all he did, he is right near the top of comedic geniuses this country has ever produced.
