What did we even trade Dario Alvarez for? I don't even remember.

Braves claimed him off waivers, then THEY traded him

Who did we put him on waivers for? Anyone remember?

Nice! Thanks.

There's got to be a joke in here somewhere about Ty Kelly being another MLB prospect we let go for nothing.

Dario Alvarez? He has a 5.10 career FIP, 5.06 ERA he's absolutely awful.

So I got one guy wrong. He had a nice ERA this year in Texas! :D

Anyway, my point is, most of those guys buoyed our system and they've not filled it back in, yet. You can argue they should have picked better in the draft, spent more internationally, traded better (though it was a terrible market to be a seller this year), but I'm simply pointing out they've graduated or traded a lot of guys the last two years.

But there have been drafts since dealing guys like Alvarez and yet the system is close to totally barren. Even the "top" prospects on this list are based in large part due to where they were selected in the draft. Dunn? Lindsay? Kay? They have done nothing or close to nothing. Even Peterson? What has he done? Vientos? They have added 40 players via 2016 draft, 40 players via 2017 draft etc etc and this is where we stand. It's a really poor job of drafting, player development coming home to roost far more than simply explaining it away with trades/promotions. Matt Harvey came up going on 6 years ago, DeGrom 5. Forget developing a rare talent like DeGrom or Thor... where is the Mets-era Murphy? Where is even a Duda? There is close to 0 help on the way in 2018 (on paper) so yet it's not as if "well 2017 was a down year but 2018 we should have a lot of talent close to ready".

Picking guys like Gavin Cecchini 12th overall when you're ostensibly rebuilding suggests that the process is broken and the priorities are wrong.

Cecchini - yes. That was a head scratcher.

But since then I think they've gone mostly upside guys and BPA in the top 2 picks.

SInce 2013, first rounders

Dom - upside
Conforto - BPA and best college bat.
Dunn - may not work out but at the time, some thought he should have gone earlier
Peterson - like Dunn, they were surprised he was still on board.

Second Rounders

Church - OK, he was a reach
But Lindsay, Alonso, Vientos - all solid 2nd round picks.

I think they've moved on from the low upside, get a guy who fills a role in Cheech/Matt Reynolds/Church/Plawecki singings. and I want to add, I still like the Plawecki signing, I'll make an exception for catcher cause it's such a tough spot to fill.

I know the general rule is "I like the pick, therefore it has upside or he was 'BPA'" and "I didn't like the pick, therefore it was a reach"...

But what about a strict 1B-only profile, a college corner outfielder, and 2 guys projected as mid rotation starters (one of which was a college reliever, and was said to perhaps project best there), says "upside"?

I admittedly didn't love the Dom pick but have been "fine" with each since, but other than hindsight or personal bias I don't see the distinction between those picks and what most people complained about Cecchini - low ceiling. He was picked accordingly to industry consensus ranking so it wasn't a "reach" for need or anything.

Dom was, at the time of the signing, said to have the best swing of his entire HS class and a plus glove. He was also still 17 so there was some possibilty of growing another inch or two (he did grow, but width not height). He was an upside pick when he was selected.

and I never said Dunn/Peterson were upside picks, I said lots of people thought they wouldn't be on board when the mets picked - so they both fell. That makes them good value picks. Maybe Dunn won't work out, but that happens. We're talking value at the time of the draft. I don't think the mets have made a mistake like they did with Cecchini or Matt Reynolds or Church since 2013. Now if they blow a 4th round pick, I don't care much, as long as they try to get good value or high upside in rounds 1 and 2.

I think they've mostly done that the last few years.
