If in five years he's a top 5 goalie, and says that way until he retires, then it's a good deal...if he's Garth Snow (then not so much)
They've tied their wagon to his star. At best, he'll be overpaid and will be so for a long time.
At worst, he's an immovable contract for the next decade and a half.
Either way, he's an Islander for the next 15 years, no one would ever take that contract.

The thing is Rick DiPietro has played 137 games and has proved nothing. He is an average goalie at best. I wish for him to succeed but seriously can you really recall a specific game that he was lights out. I am sure there are one or two considering he has 6 career shut-outs but it will take you awhile to even conjure them up.
In the NHL good goalies tend to come up through the ranks out of nowhere. The number 1 overall picks do not always turn into legendary netminders. It is to large of a commitment when it is a virtual guarentee that the Isles will have at least two goalies within the next 15 years come up through their system and be comparable or even better then DiPietro.
I'm an Islander fan, and I've lived through the lean years both with the Islanders and with the Mets. That said, Charles Wang is the worst owner in the history of either team and most likely the worst in all of sports.
I made these over the last couple months..... I think they represent my feelings quite well.

The guy is signed until he's 40.
How many 40 year old goaltenders can you recall playing at this level? Thats all that needs to be said.
