NYFS Banner Designs
This year, I'd like to run some in-house NYFS Ads, specifically for Draft Day and The Trade Deadline. If you'd like to take a shot a designing a banner ad to promote either of these events, or your favorite NYFS Feature, it'd be great to have user created banners to promote them, and I know there are a bunch of you guys who fancy yourselves Photoshop gurus. Winners will have their designs shown to our paying sponsors as part of our ad portfolio, and could potentially lead to paid banner design work for our clients in the future.

This is exactly what non-Ads are for. You can support an Ad-Free NYFS by buying non-Ads. That way you can support the site, even if you don't have a web site/business to promote.

ok, i just made a $50 donation. can you explain how as an individual the "non-ads" would work?

Cool. I attached a sample non ad. It's very low-res (less than 1.5kb) and the color matches the background colors of the ad areas, so essentially, compared to an animated ad (100kb) or a static 4 color banner (50kb) it's 90%+ load/burden less that each of 3 ads on any given page puts on the server and the load time for any given page.

Plus, as opposed to being served by an exterior ad broker/company, it comes right off of the NYFS server, so the ad draws faster because there is no delay while the ad software goes and decides which ad should be served, and then sends the ad from another web site.

Other than that, it's just like a regular ad run. It's distributed evenly across your month, about 1,000 times a day plus a percentage of our unsold inventory, so your non-Ad for example showed 1,300 times (out of 50,000+ total banners) since yesterday early afternoon (20 hours) making the site faster for everyone.

Your donation replaced 2.5% of the ads yesterday on NYFS. The more people that do it, the more often pages will draw faster and there will be fewer intrusive/distracting ads. You're basically making NYFS a better place for everyone for a month.

One of the basic tenets of NYFS is to try and make everything powered by the community as much as possible. This is a small way everyone can contribute to making the Community at NYFS better for everyone.

Hopefully more people will give it a try. It'd be pretty fun and fast to surf NYFS if half a dozen people have non-Ad runs going at a time. Plus, it'll let us upgrade the servers more regularly, get more photos from more games, etc.

can I buy non-ad space for Friends of Manny?

or does it have to be just my name -- bet they'd sell more if you allowed people to say awesome things like "This non-ad supports the Mets trading for Manny Ramirez"

absolutely. You can credit any not-actual group, just can't credit an acual organization without their permission.

but yeah, if you wanna buy some as "Mets Fans For Manny" or whatever, I think that'd be great.
