Venezuelan shortstop Rougned Odor has agreed to terms with the Rangers for $425,000.
Odor is a 5-foot-10 lefthanded hitter who stands out for his simple, compact stroke and advanced feel for hitting, though many scouts believe he will move to second base. According to some who have seen Odor recently, he has also increased his speed, running as fast as 6.62 seconds in the 60-yard dash and showing similar times for multiple teams.
Argenis Fernandez (Tainos rhp) has agreed with the San Francisco Giants to $180,000.00 contract. Ironically Argenis comes from San Francisco de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, where his home town winter league team is "Los Gigantes" the Giants. The Giants have scored another gem with the acquisition Fernandez, he stand 6'4, 180lb, with long arms, broad shoulders and a frame that will hold another 30lb. Fernandez got off to a slow start at the DPL while in 3.66 Inn he allowed 6H, 4BB and 5K with an ERA above 10. Never the less Argenis has shown pitches with consistent arm strength 88-90 (91) and tailing Fastball life. He has a good feel for a Curve and his Change-up has the looks of a future plus pitch. Argenis has been working out with Major Leaguer's Leo Nunez (FLA), Joel Peralta (TBR) and their long time pitching Coach Chiqui Mejia. Mejia took Fernandez under his tutoring 4 months ago, he was able to clean up his delivery and get Fernandez to command the strike zone better. The hard work has paid off for Fernandez; he is now a SF Giant and will start his Professional carrier in 2011. Congratulations to Argenis Fernandez, Chiqui Mejia and the SF Giants.

Victor Baez, a well known trainer in the DR, has been arrested for falsifying player documents - a big step for the MLB to get the police involved. There was an interesting article in the NYT back in October where Baez was accusing Alderson of unfairly going after the Dominican and him in particular.
The Dominican Prospect League is happy to announce that 2011 All-Star Game starter Darwin Castillo (6'5", 215lbs, RHP) has agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals for a contract worth $300,000. Castillo's 2-inning performance at the All-Star game impressed many of the 125 MLB scouts in attendance but the Kansas City Royals organization moved quickly to come to terms with Castillo and his family.
The Dominican Prospect League is happy to announce that 2011 DPL All-Star Simon Mercedes has agreed to a contract to play professional baseball with the San Francisco Giants for $400,000. Mercedes, 18, showed electric stuff in Saturday's DPL All-Star game. His fastball worked between 92-94 and his curveball exhibited sharp bite. In 2 innings of All-Star game work, Mercedes struck out 3 and only permitted 1 hit. Merecedes becomes the 2nd player from the 2011 All-Star to sign a professional agreement since Saturday, is the 30th DPL player to be signed by a MLB since Season 2 began, and the 71st player since the DPL began playing in October of 2009. Congratulations to Simon Mercedes for taking another step towards his dream and to the SF Giants organization for signing one of the top prospects in Latin America.
