He actually is almost ready for the majors...he is really simply trying to stay healthy and regain some bat speed. I am pretty sure that if he was healthy last year, he would have seen the show, and been part of the discussion this spring.

I respectively disagree. Havens is hitting .213 in AA. Forget about the majors. Havens has to earn his way to AAA first.

Agreed. He's had a lot of time at Double-A and he's old as dirt at this point. Plenty of guys come up to the majors with relatively little time at Triple-A (including a fair number of our current regulars).

If Havens had been able to stay on the field he would have made it to the majors by now easily. But, unfortunately just because Havens is old as dirt as you say does not mean he earns a trip to the majors. Havens has to hit to get to the show. Hitting .213 is not going to do it.

Of course, and I'm not really high on Havens at all at this point, but it's excessive to suggest he needs another season and a half before he could see the majors. Duda played 108 games at Triple-A before he came up to the majors for good, Kirk played 84, Murphy 1, Thole 48, Davis 10. Assuming Havens is healthy and hitting, there's no reason to think he won't be ready until 2014. His age is absolutely relevant in the respect that there is pretty much zero reason to be conservative with him.

He was also hitting .140 a month ago after starting to play back off an injury...

He has the glove and power that are greater then Murphy already

Again .213 at AA is not going to get it done. Let's see if Havens can play a full season healthy first. Zero chance Havens gets to the majors this year. So, unless there are injuries which you can never predict, Sept. 2013 is a fair projection.

I fail to see the logic: if he doesn't make the majors this year, he can't make the majors until September of next year? Even if he starts next year at Triple-A, there's still a very good chance he could be ready well before then. As I showed, spending the entire year at Triple-A would actually be out of the ordinary. If he hits for the rest of this year, he might well find himself in a battle for the starting second base position next spring. I'm not saying that any of these things will necessarily happen, but if he's hitting it's really doubtful that Havens will spend that long in the minors. If he's not hitting or he's hurt then he's unlikely to see the majors at all.

hes batting .290 since his .140. He finally healthy and has not played baseball (technically) in a long time. He has all season to get his stroke back. Once he does, he'll be ready to hit the DL again :(

Just kidding about the DL stuff

Being ready and being called up are 2 different things. For example Matt Harvey is ready now. Why is he not here? Because the Mets do not have room for him in the rotation yet. If there is an injury to the starting rotation you will see Harvey.

If Havens has a good 2nd half he probably will start in AAA next year. If Havens starts off 2013 well. That does not mean he will be called up necessarily. There are a lot of if's here. But, like I said Havens has a lot to do to get from AA to the majors.

What would you guys do if you were GM?

I know I'd:

- Cut Batista
- Call up Beato
- Send Murph, Rauch, either a decent prospect or two small time prospects and cash to Colorado for Scutaro and Belisle
- Cut Cedeno when Bay gets back
- Demote Hefner when Frank Frank comes back
- Demote Hampson
- Call up Edgin to be the second lefty
- Cut Nickeas
- Call up Rob Johnson

Lineup:

CF - Torres - S
SS - Tejada - R
3B - Wright - R
1B - Davis - L
LF - Bay - R
RF - Duda - L
2B - Scutaro - R
C - Thole - L

Bench:

C - Johnson - R
IF - Turner - R
IF - Quintanilla - L
OF - Nieuwenhuis - L
OF - Hairston - R

Rotation:

Santana - L
Dickey - R
Niese - L
Gee - R
Young - R

Bullpen:

Francisco - R
Parnell - R
Byrdak - L
Belisle - R
Edgin - L
Beato - R
Ramirez - R

We'd have a more balanced lineup, better defense up the middle, reinforced bullpen and a better balance of options off the bench than we have now

By that logic, Wilmer Flores won't make the majors until 2018 at the earliest if Wright is extended. Moreover, what is suddenly going to happen in September of next year that allows him to be in the majors, other than Murphy crashing and burning? The discussion is one of when Havens might reach the majors, and, assuming health and solid production, he will likely make the majors well before your projected date, though obviously only if there's a spot. Again, following your logic in that he can't possibly make the majors until there is an opening (and your steadfast belief that Murphy is a good major league second baseman), he won't be making the majors until Murphy is gone.

Also, Harvey is only ready if you're looking forward to five inning starts with an ERA around 4.50. His control still needs work. If Harvey was really, truly ready, the Mets would have found room for him in their joke of a bullpen.
