Asked by Buffalo reporters about potentially sending Familia to Double-A, Backman said: "I look at it as trying to work it out here, because then I feel like I failed him to some extent. But is that a possibility? It probably is a possibility. You can only take so many lumps before a guy loses total focus, so that's something that could be discussed. But I look at it as failure upon myself and my coaches not being able to get somebody right, especially when we know what kind of stuff he has."
I hate to be a downer, but I don't see a demotion really working out. He's basically a 2-pitch guy with bad control. I'm trying to hold out some hope (the strikeouts and groundballs are okay), but he's looking very much like a future reliever. Hopefully he proves me and others wrong with a big 2nd half.

I think that's some real Monday morning quarterbacking, Tej. He had a really nice year last year, and was quite strong in Bingo. It's not like we're talking Mejia to the bullpen to be Jerry's playmate.

Not on my part, I was extremely consistent in that I wanted the Big Three + Gorski to all be in Binghamton to open 2012.

Future reliever because he hit a wall in AAA...? I think this is short-sighted. He's getting hit hard in every inning. I think time and a little rest will do wonders.
I can see his velocity being intriguing in the pen, since he could simply let the gas out of the arm, but it is not time yet.

No, because he throws just 2 pitches and can't throw strikes.
Keith Law noted this exact same thing PRIOR to this season:
Quote:
If I thought there was any chance he could start, he would have made the list, but he's headed for the bullpen with a plus fastball and not enough command or secondary stuff to remain in the rotation. The real gap in expected values between him and some of the likely relievers on my top 100, such as Dellin Betances or Addison Reed, isn't as big as the ranking gap might make it seem, given how volatile reliever performances can be.
And who said move him to the bullpen now? I just said I think he's likely a future reliever, not that they should move him to the bullpen yet. I'm absolutely willing to give him the 2nd half in AAA as a starter.
Gotcha migs. I was thinking you were calling for the Mejia treatment now.
If Wheeler, Harvey continue their development, Dickey is re-signed and Johan remains healthy, there is no room in the rotation for him in the near future anyway.
