Gary LaRocque, the Cardinals director of player development, is among the names under discussion in the early stages of a Mets GM hunt that will go full throttle in about 6 weeks. LaRocque, 65, was Mets scouting director from 1998-2003.

Now this is about as perfect a candidate as they could come up with - senior citizen, familiarity with Mr. Burns and Smithers, er, Fred & Jeff Wilpon, and likely to work cheap.

Now if they can resist a hire like this, there may be hope. Otoh, if they go back down this path, that will be a bridge too far. They are at a crossroads for me. I won't mind if they bring in someone from the Cards org in an advisory role, but not LaRoque as the top decision maker.

That Post article also said the Mets believe they are too reliant on analytics.

They're also too reliant on over-the-hill and/or washed-up players so LaRocque would fit right in...

Our old friend Daniel Murphy was claimed on revocable trade waivers. Not by the Yankees. Assume the Nats will try to make the best deal possible with whoever claimed him. Or of course just letting him go will save 4 million for the rest of the season.

I would be OK with Murphy returning next year, kinda as a mentor to Alonso and McNeil. Just not on a long-term deal.

Sort of like how AGone mentored Dominic Smith?

Why? Still have Soto, Robles, Scherzer, Turner, Rendon, Eaton, Strasburg

Minors Kieboom is close

Been there done that with Murph. Mentors are overrated
