Vehemently disagree. Like Sandy or don't like Sandy, but lets not mischaracterize his approach retroactively. It was never his intention to aggressively attack offseasons, and he told you as much.

Unless you're taking the great Pagan-for-Torres swap as a sign of him being aggressive.

Who cares how quick it is if its junk. Thats my point. The idea that BVW is somehow going to get good free agents to sign early to the peanuts the Mets can pay them is wishful thinking. Now, I think they have one more "big" player to sign but everything is going to be around the fringes.

Sandy First Offseason Before February

December 7, 2010
New York Mets signed free agent D. J. Carrasco of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

New York Mets signed free agent Ronny Paulino of the Florida Marlins.

January 3, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Taylor Buchholz of the Toronto Blue Jays.

New York Mets signed free agent Chris Capuano of the Milwaukee Braves.

January 15, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Willie Harris of the Washington Nationals.

January 17, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Chris Young of the San Diego Padres.

January 20, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Scott Hairston of the San Diego Padres.

January 21, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Blaine Boyer of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

New York Mets signed free agent Tim Byrdak of the Houston Astros.

Sandy Second Offseason Before February

November 16, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Vinny Rottino of the Florida Marlins.

December 6, 2011
New York Mets traded Angel Pagan to the San Francisco Giants for Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez.

December 9, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Garrett Olson of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

December 14, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Jon Rauch of the Toronto Blue Jays.

December 19, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Frank Francisco of the Toronto Blue Jays.

December 21, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Rob Johnson of the San Diego Padres.

December 22, 2011
New York Mets signed free agent Omar Quintanilla of the Texas Rangers.

January 13, 2012
New York Mets signed free agent Ronny Cedeno of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ha was thinking the same thing. The most "exciting" add (retrospectively speaking) I think was Capuano or Carrasco in that 1st year list. In the 2nd year it was Frank Francisco. Let those names resonate.

Actually there's one move missing from that list that generated ridiculous hype - BRAD EMAUS, Rule 5 pick! What a legend Sandy was on here for such a move!

A little of this is hindsight, of course, but Gelbs is certainly around these guys a bunch and at least has SOME insights that the public is not privvy to.

Highlights the differences in approach and style between Sandy/BVW. Says it was Sandy's philosophy to be a bit contrarian, not view the Winter Meetings as the end of anything, etc.

Guess we are back in this thread?

Here is Cerrone's proposal:

Mets get: Bogaerts/Bradley Jr, "a prospect"
Red Sox get: Syndergaard

Mets get: Realmuto
Marlins get: Rosario/Nimmo OR Conforto

Cerrone needs to hang it up. Bogaerts is a FA after 2019, Realmuto after 2020. So you're dealing Syndergaard and Nimmo and Rosario (or Conforto) for 1 season of Bogaerts (and giving him a monster contract/lose him to FA) and 2 seasons of Realmuto... Syndergaard has 3 years of control, the others have 4...um.

Not to defend Cerrone, but I think he was assuming the Mets could eventually get away with only giving up one of Rosario/Nimmo/Conforto.

Either way, I still agree with you, Metro.

I'd do Rosario for Realmuto straight but EVERY indication is the Marlins want 2 major pieces. But that's really besides the point. Boegarts and Wheeler would both be FA. Assuming a good year from both of them you're looking at the kind of HUGE deals the Mets loathe. Boegarts with a normal season from him will get a deal larger than one the Mets have ever given out. Wheeler has another good year, we can look at Corbin's deal as a comp. Yeah the Mets are giving out 350 million to 2 players... lol

If there is a genuine willingness to part with Noah, it seems like a deal with the Pads/Marlins is what's likely to happen.

I was listening to the FAN yesterday and a Mets fan called in to say he wasn't renewing his tix. He said he had a conversation with his ticket guy and complained that the owners don't spend. The Mets people clearly have a script for this because he said his ticket guy told him that payroll was at $158m right now.

Ehalt also just wrote a piece today about payroll and he has it at $155m right now (not factoring in Wrights insurance).

Where the heck are they getting these numbers?

2019 Salaries

Cespedes - $29
Cano - $20 ($4 from Sea)
deGrom - $12.9
Familia - $10
Lagares - $9
Frazier - $9
Vargas - $8
Noah - $5.9
Wheeler - $5.3
Wright - $3.75 ($11.25 in insurance)
Conforto - $4.4
TdA - $3.7
Matz - $3
Plawecki - $1.3
Pre-Arb Others - ~$8

Total - $133.25 ($144.5 w/ Wright at full salary)

This is embarrassing. The luxury tax this year is $206m!
