Most Mets Fans love him but...

He had plenty of ABs this year and he failed to progress
OPS+
2016 .267 .319 .469 .788 111
2017 .271 .307 .488 .795 109
2018 .267 .319 .417 .736 107

Wilmer not hitting well against lefties last year was a big letdown

He's not going to be cheap anymore

What would you do?

I love Wilmer.

I think leaving the Mets will be a great career move.

You think someone else will give him more chances?

Seems like an easy one to me. Is this a trick question?

Arbitration gets him around $5 million. Is that worth it for a platoon 1B/PH/Utility Player who is not a strong fielder? Is he a non-tender? A sign and trade?

Time to go sorry Wilmer! I do foresee him having a pretty good year for an AL team though.

To me, TDA and Wilma are easy non-tenders... and I'd even put TDA ahead of WF to consider possibly bringing back. But if they did bring him back (TDA), I'm sure it would be after letting him go and negotiating a lower incentive type deal. But I would still be surprised if the Mets didn't go a different direction behind the plate.

I think everyone certainly has a soft spot for Wilmer but sadly his skillset is very easy to replace; he hits LHP well but doesn't really offer anything else (not good anywhere defensively, poor/slow baserunner). There's probably a gazillion dudes across AAA that can replicate that exact profile.

If they tender Wilmer and TDA they are only 15 million (or so) under last years payroll. I realize they might add payroll but that's an insanely small amount of wiggle room given at minimum they need 2-3 relievers and 1-2 bats.

While I think first base will eventually be all Alonso's, it's still a long way from being decided as such. Keeping Wilmer allows them to consider trading Bruce and keeping Dom as part of a Lefty-Righty platoon with he and Wilmer; at least until Alonso is ready.

Also, with TJR expected to miss some time at the start of the year, Wilmer does supply that right-handed bat off the bench that can fill in any of the infield spots for an inning or two.

Bruce will not be traded and likely cannot without zero sum contract in return. He ain't cheap.

I think the fact that VW went to see Alonso might signal a different approach to roster building.

I'd love to see Fraser playing the role you described for Wilmer and the team acquiring a quality 3B longer term solution
