I'm always skeptical on certain coaching roles having a tangible effect - 1st base coach is the primary one, but also bullpen coach is up there, as not sure what Bones is doing specifically that is not coming from Eiland. But no doubt the bullpen continues to suck here, and at some Bones has to be accountable I guess given the job title.

Roessler was an easy one, as that was a lazy hire last year. Under qualified and the hitting definitely wasn't good last year, including regression from a bunch of guys who did better under Long, and Roessler was supposed to just be a continuation, right?

Will say that this feels like new regime telling Mickey we can blame the underlings this time, but then you run out of excuses when the staff gets wholesome changes (think Gary D is probably gone, too, right?) and nothing improves.

Much like how it makes sense for BVW's shield to have the manager still left to fire if things are bad next year rather than starting with his own guy, there's always layers to this stuff. Mickey had a bunch of holdovers, etc., that he can point to now, but surely BVW is telling him to get his guys now, because if 2019 sees another 70-something wins, the blame starts with the Mick.

I mean I'm not sure it makes a difference either way. Do we really think Callaway would be back again if they have a poor 2019? I don't think his job is safe IN-SEASON if they aren't winning games. He's coming back but it's do or die for his job this year.

Yeah, I would have to believe that even if they only softly push chips in on 2019, Callaway is likely to be on shaky ground throughout.

Believe it was reported last year that Sherlock was on a 2 year deal, meaning his contract is up too.

He's awful with the send/holds and I never really saw the catching defense improve, so fine moving on from him as well. Maybe moving Gary D back to 3rd base where he was with the Angels?

The right call would be to move diSarcena to third or first base with the other of he and Amaro moving to third. Hire a candidate who has extensive national league/positional experience for the bench coach.

And if Bones was at fault for last year, then he should be credited with other successful years, but the change probably makes sense.

Roessler was an easy fix, but now he has to be replaced.

Bones' tenure, 2012 - 2018: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx? ... &sort=13,d

"Other successful years" does not compute.
